Student Self-Assessment
Self-advocacy is about student voice, self-awareness, confidence, and ownership of their work. Learning these skills allow students to reflect on their own needs, strengths and goals. On this page can be found self- assessments that students can take, which will provide direction to their current self-advocacy level and the next steps and goals needed to be worked on. Each resource below will help students assess where they are at and provide a starting point.
The University of Kansas has a self-determination inventory that will ask students questions about how they feel about their ability to be self-determined; that is to make choices, set and go after goals, and make decisions.
It is designed for students between the ages of 13-22 with and without disabilities.
The student inventory takes about 10 minutes to complete and offers audio that reads the question aloud and in-text definitions of words.
The University of Kansas(KU) Beach Center on Disability also houses several self- determined inventories for elementary, transition age youth, adults as well as for families and teachers. Access the inventories here:

KU now houses the Arc Self-Determination scale for adults, but is applicable for older students. The tool assists in identifying individual strengths and areas of support needed in self-determination. You can find the scoring rubric on the KU Beach Center on Disability self-determination page.
Before Age 18 has a short 15 question inventory for students to rate themselves on when it comes to self-advocacy and speaking up for themselves and others. It touches on knowing strengths and challenges, understanding rights as a citizen, and being able to share needs with others.
