Episode 5 - What can ONE person do?

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Margaret Mead :: Anthropologist

Show Notes

In the face of such huge global problems, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless, and to find ourselves asking, “What difference can one person make?”  The answer is that one person can make all the difference in the world.

Just on a personal level, if you live in North American, your carbon emissions are huge compared to virtually any other place in the world. The emission levels of the average American are roughly four times the global average. This includes food, transportation and consumption choices. China recently became the world's largest national carbon emitter. But on a per-person basis, they are still less than half of what we emit in North America. We are 15 times those of the average citizen of India. You make a difference for better, or worse.

Any single step you take towards environmentalism can be multiplied by your wider circle of friends and followers. Let’s be that change-agent for those around us today. Tune-in and get pumped-up.

One of the greatest obstacles the planet must overcome is political indifference or ignorance concerning the massive impact we are having on the climate and environment. Governments everywhere have the power to implement policies and regulations that will help to avert the worse impacts of a warming planet. One of the most effective things you can do is support and vote for political parties that stand for developing solutions that will help to turn the tide on greenhouse gas pollution and promote clean energy and technology companies. (Below is a wonderful resource rating all the politicians in Congress).

 Vote for the planet.

So, can an individual make a difference when it comes to the environment? The answer, as you may have guessed, is an unequivocal yes. You can make the biggest impact on the people around you. Ignoring these issues is no longer an option. If you are engaged in "everyday denial" —  believing that climate change is happening — but not bothering to act, why should anyone else?  We need to acknowledge that we've waited too long, and that massive change is not only unavoidable but already under way. Our old familiar globe is drastically changing in ways that no human has ever seen.

Any single step you take towards environmentalism can be multiplied by your wider circle of friends and followers. Let’s be that change-agent for those around us today.
