The Mission of the EPA is to Protect Human Health and The Natural Environment
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creates and enforces laws designed to protect the environment and human health. 4 As part of their mission, they seek to ensure that Americans have a clean environment, including the air, water, and land they use and enjoy.
Why we Need The EPA
Cuyahoga River on fire, 1969 in Cleveland, OH. The River caught fire (!) and flames reached five stories in height. It burned docks, piers, and boats. This incident was a graphic reminder how bad things had gotten, and kick off the modern environmental movement.

The EPA Fights for Environmental Justice
The EPA works hard to make sure that low-income communities and communities of color are given a voice and put before polluter profits. The EPA is a real champion when it comes to holding polluters accountable for making communities sick that are historically disadvantaged.
Executive Order 12898 directed federal agencies to develop environmental justice strategies to help federal agencies address disproportionately high and adverse human health or environmental effects of their programs on minority and low-income populations.
The Presidential Memorandum accompanying the order underscores certain provisions of existing law that can help ensure that all communities and persons across the nation live in a safe and healthy environment.
Meaningful involvement means:
People have an opportunity to participate in decisions about activities that may affect their environment and/or health;
The public's contribution can influence the regulatory agency's decision;
Community concerns will be considered in the decision making process; and
Decision makers will seek out and facilitate the involvement of those potentially affected.
Every regional and headquarter office has an environmental justice coordinator who serves as a focal point within that organization. This network of individuals provides outreach and educational opportunities to external, as well as internal, individuals and organizations. To find out more about Agency efforts to address environmental justice, contact an EJ coordinator based on your location or area of interest.
