Episode 4 – Food Waste

Podcast 4 —  So much food. So much waste.

“Imagine walking out of a grocery store with four bags of groceries, dropping one in the parking lot, and just not bothering to pick it up. That’s essentially what we’re doing.”          — Dana Gunders (author)

Show Notes

One of the most destructive environmental practices that you could fix three times a day, food waste is an appalling part of America's throw-away culture. It's costing us time, money and our environment. We are wasting up to 40 percent of our food from farm to fork to face to landfill. It is time to stop biting off more than we can chew and clean our plates.  And it's so easy to fix! Tune-in and find out how.

— Born to be Wasted —

All food waste is not equally wasteful. The type of food that is wasted has a big influence on the amount of negative environmental impacts associated with that waste.

While less meat gets wasted than does fruit and vegetables, the amount of energy required to produce meat is "significantly" more than that for plant-based food production. That means that the associated greenhouse gas emissions from meat production is also much higher. So wasting meat has a much greater negative environmental impact.

Wasted food has a lot of other embodied waste associated with it, such as the water and energy inputs necessary to produce it. As you can see from the chart meat and dairy products (particularly beef) are inherently more wasteful than wasted fruit and vegetables.

And the saddest thing is, considering the horror show that most factory farms are, we are putting these animals through unthinkable amounts of stress and suffering just to be tossed in the garbage. All of those living creatures born to be wasted...

How To End The Food Waste Fiasco | Rob Greenfield | TEDxTeen

A third of the planet's food goes to waste —                        here's what we throw out the most

Here's a look at how different food categories rank in terms of waste.                                          The percentages indicate the portion of each type of food that is thrown out.

Milk, yogurt, and cheese — we waste 17.1%.

Chicken, beef, and pork — we waste  21.5%. One out of five animals are born to be wasted.

Lentils, green peas, chickpeas, and seeds that make oil — we waste 22.1%.

Cereal, bread, and rice — we waste 29.1%.

Tuna, salmon, shrimp, and other seafood — we waste  34.7%.

Fruits and vegetables — we waste  45.7%.

And the loser is: Potatoes, beets, radishes, and carrots — 46.2%.      Isn't that number amazing?
