Episode 2 — Cars:

Five  Words  that  will  Save  the  Planet

Almost every environmental problem we have can be traced to our addiction to fossil fuels, primarily oil.

             — Dennis Weaver (actor and activist)

Production and Destruction

Cars consume a lot of energy before they ever make it to the open road. Automotive production leaves a giant footprint because materials like steel, rubber, glass, plastics, paints, lubricants, and many more must be created before a new ride is ready to roll.

Similarly, the end of a car’s life doesn’t mark the end of its environmental impact. Plastics, toxic battery acids, and other products often stay in the environment. As cool as cars are... they are very dirty and very destructive.

Show Notes

Ahhh, the automobile. Powerful, sleek, sexy.  An absolute object of desire for many. Of course there is the traffic, expense, and parking issues associated with driving. However, that doesn't deter most of us who want to own a car.

After all cars are a necessity. Aren't they?

Maybe because we consider life to be impossible without a car, we have a tendency to ignore some of the concerns associated with driving :  massive habitat destruction, the release of atmosphere altering gases and pollution, oil spills, and foreign wars. The fact is, our cars, and our trucks, and our motorcycles are the second most destructive force on the planet. (For the most harmful activity, check out Episode 3).  After you listen to this podcast, it will be apparent why you should drive less and explore alternative transportation options.
