Why do we Find Babies Cute?
There are powerful nurturing instincts as to why humans find babies so cute – particularly for our own children.
Human babies come into the world utterly helpless and remain dependent on their parents for many years. Our babies are cleverly – if unknowingly – ensuring that they stay alive.
Interestingly, newborns are rated ‘less cute’ than older babies. Adults find the faces of babies most appealing at around the six-month mark. And at what age do babies stop being irresistibly adorable? Age 4 ½.
For humans, this attraction spills over to cute animals also. Kittens, puppies, and all manner of other species. Sadly, a study published last year found that ‘ugly’ animals are at risk of extinction because they don’t attract as much research and conservation funding.
There is a science and an art to cuteness. One that marketers use to manipulate us – kind of like babies do!
Conceivable Future is a women-led network of Americans bringing awareness to the threat climate change poses to our reproductive lives, and demanding an end to US fossil fuel subsidies.
The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement
The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, or VHEMT (pronounced vehement) for short. The organisation’s literature is rational and often humorous in tone.
They don’t call for human extinction – even in jest – but they do campaign against population growth which, it says, contributes to environmental degradation, resource depletion, poverty and inequality.
The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement is a movement not an organization. It’s a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We’re not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.
Phasing out the human species by voluntarily ceasing to breed will allow Earth's biosphere to return to good health. Crowded conditions and resource shortages ...
