GUIGNOL AND FLAGEOLET
Variations about the drunkenness of power and the endogamic aesthetics of hat
This exhibition is an addition spontaneously expectorated on the weekend of June 24 and 25, 2023. I apologize in advance to all those who do not see the same reality as I do.
AN ADDITION TO 2/24
"Guignol et Flageolet" is an exhibition that came out of my guts like an urge to vomit during that weekend when the whole world witnessed a tragi-comic play on a stage littered with hundreds of thousands of corpses, wounded, raped, and children with memories crushed for life.
It is now the fourth part of my exhibition 2/24, created some days after the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
COMPOSITION
It consists of two parts. Guignol : The Master and Vladimir, a title inspired by Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. The Flageolet family : a series of portraits with pretty hats that are totally interchangeable.
WHO ARE GUIGNOL AND FLAGEOLET ?
Guignol is a French glove puppet created in Lyon around 1808. By metonymy, the term also refers to the comic puppet theater in which Guignol is the main character, forming with Gnafron and Madelon a recurring trio in the classical repertory.
The main characters in Guignol's theater are the canut Guignol, his companion Gnafron and Madelon, often nicknamed "Mère la Grogne", Guignol's wife and sometimes Gnafron's daughter. There's also Toinon, Gnafron's wife, the gendarme, also known as "Flageolet".
In France, a Flageolet is a bean with the ability to cause noisy, nauseating farts. Among popular French expressions, a "guignol" is an incompetent idiot.
