BIOGRAPHY & ART PROJECT

BIOGRAPHY

Milena Carbone in Second Life is a fiction in which, as in any artistic work, biographical and imaginary elements are mixed.

I am born in 1992 in Strasbourg, France. I began writing and photography at 16 and studied psychology at university in 2010. In 2013, I quit my studies for a computer graphics course.

I worked in an ad agency for two years before becoming a freelance graphic designer in 2015. Between 2017 and 2019, encouraged by artist friends, I published texts and exhibited photographs. Since 2019, I have shifted to digital art, mainly using AI tools, which I edit in Photoshop for printing or digital.

ART PROJECT

ARTIST, ART AND WORK

The Carbone Studio's art project is a synthesis of Milena Carbone's character and my creative output. Her presence, stance, story, and dialogue enhance how her work is perceived, questioning the idea that art ceases to belong to its maker once displayed.

I believe that art asks important questions; otherwise, it’s decoration. I diverge from the "art for art's sake" credo, asserting art's societal and political significance.

WHY AI ART ?

Leveraging AI for digital art has allowed me to express my intentions and emotions more compellingly. I've set aside traditional photography and SL art in favor of AI tools like Midjourney and Firefly to produce art that feels authentic to me.

I acknowledge the art community's reservations about AI, including copyright issues and the potential for forgeries. The philosophical debate on AI's role in art reflects the transformative period akin to photography's dawn, teeming with questions.

The advent of AI tools should be approached with caution, given human tendencies toward folly rather than nobility. Artists must adopt AI to maintain their crucial role in portraying the human condition as we face self-inflicted peril.

HOW I CREATE AI ART

AI isn't an end but a tool I blend into a multimedia composition, enhancing creative serendipity, emotion, and prowess. As AI's capabilities expand to include video, 3D, music, and writing, artists will be distinguished by their intentions and the insights they offer, not merely their style or medium.

AI is expanding the artist's toolkit into the 21st century, building on, not replacing, the tools of bygone eras.

In my practice, I strive for a unique style, navigating the complexities of this evolving medium. If Nikon or Photoshop are my stalwarts, then Midjourney is the wild mustang.

My ethical rule for AI: never mimic another artist's style. Although AI inherently assimilates influences, and I too am shaped by artists I admire, there's a profound difference between being influenced and intentionally copying another's style.

NOVEL, DIGITAL ART AND VIRTUAL DANCE

The Carbone Studio shows pictorial, literary and dance performances in a 3D environment. The whole is created and produced by Milena Carbone using the possibilities of Second Life. Unskilled, as yet, in 3D sculpture and scripting, the immersive aspect of her works is still limited, but evolves year after year.

Music has always been one of the essential ingredients of Milena Carbone's life, as necessary to her as the air she breathes. Music and dance are a way to live spirituality. It was natural for her to experiment with choreography in Second Life. Dance is now an important part of her creation in Second Life.
