DEFINITION:
Individual, 1 vs. 1 play in attack against an opposite player, when a player has the possession of the ball
GUIDELINES:
It's an event, which is used when a player have the possession of the ball and he uses his technique or physical abilities, vision and arsenal with feints, lying moves to pass through, dribble the opposite defender or his ability to shield and guard the ball, using also his body and strength. Mostly dribble 1 vs. 1 against an opposite player (also could be more than one opponent, but with every single player it's a different duel). Offensive duel could happen all over the pitch, even in his own penalty area (for example when the goalkeeper dribble against the opposite player, who tries to steal the ball from him).
- a player uses his physical and technical abilities to guard the ball and keep it's possession
- the player must have the possession of the ball, the duel could be all over the pitch (not only in attack)
- there have to be a contact between the players or individual play
Mane shields the ball
The striker in blue shirt shields the ball near the side line
Lautaro shields the ball and there is a foul against him next
Emre Can from Dortmund shields the ball with his body (even doesn't touch it)
N.7 in white shirt - foul against him, but he is in front of the opposite player and only offensive duel is enough
- dribble, feints, lying moves - every 1 vs. 1 play, when a player tries to dribble / pass through an opponent
- the idea of the player should be to eliminate the opposite player (doesn't matter successful or not)
Mane dribbles the opposite player with right take on
Mane successfully eliminates the opposite player with left take on
Unsuccessful attempt for dribble (right take on) by the attacker in green shirt
Unsuccessful attempt for dribble (left take on) by the attacking player in white/blue shirt in the middle of the pitch
Successful attempt for dribble by Neymar - with left take on, he eliminates the opposite player
Dribble by N.7 in green/red shirt (not just under pressure to the next action)
Successful attempt for dribble by N.14 in white shirt, stopped with a foul
The player in red shirt in the middle of the pitch, who kicks the ball over the head of the attacking player in white shirt - this is an offensive duel (defensive for the player in white), dribble against him with his move (at the same time, without take on, because he dribbles back)
- dribble by a player with no intention to pass through the opponent, but to find better position to do some action
- usually used before crosses and shots
Mane goes to the left side to cross the ball
Mane moves the ball to the right side and tries to find space to shoot the ball
The player in yellow shirt does a lying move and goes left to shoot the ball
N.10 in white shirt goes to the side line (doesn't try to eliminate Thiago Silva and move into the penalty area)
Unsuccessful attempt by Mane to go to the left side (against the goalkeeper) and score a goal
N.11 in white shirt tries to find space to cross the ball, but the opposite defender stops him
Bad attempt by Morata to go left (the idea of the player must be always considered, doesn't matter is it or not successful action)
The player in green shirt, near the penalty area, tries to find space to play the ball forward, but his first touch is not so good and he gives a chance to the opposite player to jump in his feet with attempt to stop him - it's an offensive duel, with left here - this is the idea of the whole duel, not loose ball duel, doesn't matter that at the end both player have chances to reach the ball at the same time
N.15 in white shirt tries to find space and cuts inside against the opposite defender - it's offensive duel (with right), not only touch, because he changes his movement with the first touch of the ball
N.11 in green shirt plays 1 vs. 1 agains the opposite player and tries to fine space to cross the ball - offensive duel should be tagged here
- if there are duels with 2 or more players, all of them are considered like different offensive duels
- 2 different duels in one situation with the same opposite player must be tagged like one duel (the last part of the duel), if there is no other action (accelaration for example) between them
N.4 in yellow shirt - 2 offensive duels, one after another, with the same player - should be tagged like one duel (the last part of it)
Imobbile tries to dribble between 2 players at the same time - must be tagged like 2 different duels against both players
N.7 in pink shirt tries to dribble between 2 opposite players at the same time - 2 duels must be tagged for him again both players
N.28 in green shirt intercepts the opposite player's pass and dribbles him after that - it's offensive duel with take on, accelaration next and another offensive duel at the end, before the foul - in this situation we have 2 offensive duels with the same player, which are separated with another action between them - accelaration, so both duels should be tagged
The GK tries to kick the ball forward, but it's intercepted and it goes to the player in green shirt near the side line, where he dribbles around the opposite player and cuts inside to the penalty area. The opposite player recover his position and reaches again the player in green inside in the penalty area and stops him - 2 offensive duels (first with right take on) for the player in green) and 2 defensive duels (first one with left take on) + defensive positioning between them for the player in blue shirt
- if player attacks and a defender holds his position, waits the action for a few seconds - the player crosses or shoots the ball - offensive duel must be tagged, because the defender leaves some time to the opponent to do a dangerous action (shot or cross). The same situation, if there is a backward pass next (not a dangerous action) - offensive duel is not needed to the passing player.
- it's not necessary to be tagged offensive duel before every cross or shot by a player, there must be at least a few seconds play 1 vs. 1
- some tricks with the ball are not always enough to be used a duel
Not needed duel for Mahrez - the opposite player waits his action and there is a backward pass next
Not needed duel for N.21 in white shirt - just stops and crosses the ball - not an individual play against the opposite player (not always before shot or cross there must be a duel first)
Not needed duel for Havertz, because the opposite player waits his actions and he does a backward pass
Duel must be tagged here for Chiesa, because the opposite defender waits his actions and the Italian player shoots the ball (dangerous action next)
N.7 in dark shirt - he does some tricks with the ball against the opposite player, but this is not enough for a duel
N.9 in black shirt tries some feints, lying moves long enough time and does good forward pass at the end, creating dangerous situation for his team - the opposite defender waits his action, doesn't attack him and gives him a chance to does some dangerous action, so offensive and defensive duels for both players must be tagged here
After the cross the player in white/blue shirt just stops and crosses the ball, doesn't matter that there is an opposite player near him - offensive duel is not needed before every cross or shot
For N.12 in white shirt should be tagged offensive duel (defensive for the defender), doesn't matter that the defender doesn't try to steal the ball and just holds his position, still gives time to the attacking player to try dangerous pass into the penalty area, even if it's a bit backward pass, directed to the penalty spot
- not every contact between a players, must be an offensive duel - if a player is touched very slight an opposite player with hand, it's not enough to use a duel...
- if there is contact, but after the action (a player is pushed after the pass/shot/cross) - it's not needed to add a duel
Not needed duel for Haaland, because the contact with the defender is after/in the moment of the shot
Not a duel for the attacking player against Alba - even he tries to avoid the contact
N.17 in red shirt - slight touch with hand by the opposite player is not enough to tag a duel
N.47 in black shirt - not a duel, there is slight contact (pressing duel by the opposite player)
Not a duel for Mane against the defender - he avoids the contact with Mane in the penalty area (before the shot)
For N.14 in red shirt it's not needed to be used offensive duel before the pass, because the contact with the opposite player is not so significant (the defender just marks him)
There is a long pass to the player in white near the side line - it's not offensive duel for him (not defensive duel for the opposite player) in this situation, because he stops the ball very well and cuts inside to the penalty area, but mostly because of the bad position of the opposite defender, who underestimated the situation
Here offensive duel is not needed for N.5 in yellow (defensive duel for N.11 in black shirt too) - the opposite player is pressing him and he uses his body to move the ball forward, at the same time using the inertia of the opposite player, who eliminates himself with his aggressive movement...also he tries to catch the defender with hand, but this is not enough to use a duel here, so it's better to be tagged touch + under pressure
Touch should be used in this case, not offensive duel with left (defensive duel, right for the defender), for N.17 in white shirt, because the opposite defender wasn't well orientated and able to reach the ball and put himself out of position, trying to sprint after to reach his opponent
- if there is unsuccessful attempt for dribble by a player and he looses the ball, the opposite player shields it next and the attacking player make a foul - there must be offensive duel first, defensive duel next and foul at the end for the attacking player
- it's possible a player to do a foul in attack
- if a player passes the ball and an opposite player attacks him and kicks him after the pass, but the referee gives a foul - the pass should be not needed, there must be offensive duel for the passing player and defensive duel + foul for the opposite player, because of the foul (always with duel first)
Offensive duel for Lautaro and foul against him - foul must be tagged always to the player, who does the foul, not to the player, who is fouled
Offensive duel for Neymar and Simulation foul next (foul in attack)
Foul in attack (in combination with Offensive duel) for N.17 from Croatia
Successful dribble by N.14 in white shirt, stopped with foul by Varane
2 duels here - Offensive duel + take on for N.2 in white shirt (he looses the ball) and next defensive duel for him too, before the foul
Offensive duel for Kroos (in black shirt) - the pass must be not tagged, because there is a foul before by the opposite player
Late attempt by the opposite player to steal the ball - Offensive duel (without pass) for N.12 in white shirt
Foul in attack by the attacking player in red shirt - bad attempt to shields the ball
- offensive duel must be used, when a player is in better position/closer to reach the ball first or has the possession of it
- offensive duel could be used even if a player doesn't touch the ball (just puts his body in front of the opposite player and he fouls him)
- if the opposite player has advantage to reach the ball (shields it, guards it to go out of the pitch) and doesn't touch the ball at all - duel must be used
Shaw from England - he uses his body and better position to shields the ball - even if a player doesn't touch the ball, but has advantage - Offensive duel must be tagged
Emre Can from Dortmund shields the ball with his body and good position, without touching it
After the first fight, Akanji (in red shirt) does good movement, wins advantage and better position to reach the ball first
N.6 in blue shirt takes good position and uses his body to shield the ball from the opposite player - even if he doesn't touch it, still it's an offensive duel for him
