A community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
At Pierpont, students, faculty, and staff have learning in common.
Empowering individuals to transform their lives through education.
Ages, Cultures, Races, Religions, Physical & Mental Abilities, Personalities, General worldview/opinions, Sex, Sexual Orientations, Education Levels, Social Levels, Life Experiences, Income Levels, and National or Location Origins.
Anytime that you are with one or more other person(s), there are differences.
Sometimes we are close with others in elements such as our culture, race, religion, age, gender, and disabilities.
Sometimes we are very different.
The differences provide great opportunities to learn and discover what you have in common!
Connections keep us together & motivate us to keep going.
The pyramid on the right is Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which is an idea in psychology proposed by American psychologist Abraham Maslow.
As the needs at one level are predominately met, we are able to move to the next level.
Feeling that we belong, belongingness, is extremely important. We survive better together. Everyone needs a support system.
Connecting with people in Pierpont's learning community will help you feel included and provide motivation to help you succeed and meet your educational goals. Connect with your instructors, staff members, fellow students. You can share good times and become resources for each other.
With this in mind, Pierpont has several student groups and clubs.
Click on the link below to check them out to see if there are some that interest you.
If not, connect with Student Involvement to learn about how to create one.
Respect is a foundation of a successful community.
It is a core value of any group and includes mutual respect.
While there are different types of respect, respect ultimately consists of giving due regard to the feelings, wishes, rights, and traditions of others.
Including them in the community. Encouraging them to be involved.
This is for your practice.
This does not need to be done to complete the module.
In a journal or on paper, write down a negative thought you have been having recently on the topics above or other topics.
Sit back, take a couple of deep breaths, and allow your body to relax. Then write down a positive (growth mindset) thought to counterbalance or counteract the negative (fixed mindset) thought.
If you are feeling out of place like you don't fit in for whatever reason or you are experiencing bias or bullying,
