Success Mindsets

Secrets for Success in College - Part 2

WHAT IS a MINDSET?

A mindset is a collection of beliefs, including self-perceptions.

It is a thought habit.

Our mindsets determine how we make sense of who we are, who other people are, and what the world is.

They shape how we think, what we feel, and what we do.

Growth and Fixed Mindsets

We have mindsets about many things.

Some mindsets are positive and help us.

Others are negative and can trap us in self-defeating cycles.

One pair of mindsets is Growth and Fixed Mindsets.

“In the fixed mindset, everything is about the outcome. If you fail—or if you’re not the best—it’s all been wasted. The growth mindset allows people to value what they’re doing regardless of the outcome. They’re tackling problems, charting new courses, working on important issues. Maybe they haven’t found the cure for cancer, but the search was deeply meaningful.”

Carol S. Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

A Gateway to Success

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career.

I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again. That is why I succeed.”

"When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before."

•	The Iceberg illusion, a phrase coined by Emily Pronin, is a way of visually explaining success. Success is an iceberg. o	The tip of the iceberg is the success that people see. o	The bottom, more prominent side of the iceberg is what people don’t see: Persistence. Hard work. Disappointment. Dedication. Sacrifice. Failures. Discipline.

Resilience

Resilience is purpose, mindfulness, flexibility, and acceptance

Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.

A number of factors contribute to how well people adapt to adversities, predominant among them are:

Psychological research demonstrates that the resources and skills associated with more positive adaptation (i.e., greater resilience) can be cultivated and practiced.

https://www.apa.org/topics/resilience#

Resilience refers to the ability to successfully adapt to stressors, maintaining psychological well-being in the face of adversity. It’s the ability to “bounce back” from difficult experiences. Resilience is not a trait that people either have or don’t have. It involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that can be learned and developed in everyone.

Resilience is about being adaptable. It’s about being flexible. It’s about recognizing that we’ve got strengths that perhaps we never knew we had until we have to use them. And like many things in life - the more we practice, the more we learn. The more we find out about resilience and certainly the more we do of it, then the more resilient we become.

Resilient people are able to adapt to stress, crises, and trauma. They find ways to bounce back from the ups and downs of life and move forward. Some people are born with a strong sense of resilience. Others may need to learn skills and develop resilience. If you would like to become more resilient, these tips and information can help.

Remember that resilience is a skill, like riding a bike.

The more you practice, the better you’ll be.

Ways to become more resilient:
Resilience isn’t about “toughing it out” or reacting to every setback with a smile. Resilient people still feel sad, angry, or frustrated when faced with a setback. But they find ways to move forward, to tackle challenges with creativity, hope, and a positive attitude

Here are some ways to increase your resilience:
