FAFSA

Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Finances

What is the fafsa?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form every student needs to fill out

to get financial aid help in paying for college.

The FAFSA determines a student's eligibility for need-based federal financial aid for college (grants, scholarships, work-study, loans).

The FAFSA itself is NOT an application for financial aid.  The information on the FAFSA is used by colleges to determine if a student qualifies for aid, and if so what aid they can receive.

Completing the fafsa

You can do this online.

Completing your FAFSA is not required for completion of this module.

 On a computer or tablet

Use a computer or tablet to fill out the FAFSA.

On Your Phone

Download the myStudentAid app onto your phone in the Apple App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store (Android).

It's a smart app, so it recognizes if you are the student or parent when logging in.  It removes questions you don't need to answer and refers to you as the appropriate person in relation to the FAFSA being completed.

important

A new FAFSA needs to be completed every year you plan to attend college.

It is FREE!!

Some forms of State aid require students to complete the FAFSA.  Even if you may not have qualified for Federal aid in the past, you may now qualify for the WV Invests grant, which requires a current FAFSA to be completed.

fafsa Deadlines

There is not a deadline to complete the FAFSA.  You can complete the application anytime.

However...

there are deadlines for federal and State grants, loan, and scholarship applications that require the FAFSA.

If you miss the Federal deadline, go ahead and complete the FAFSA.  You might qualify for other financial aid.

______________________________________________

Make sure you are aware of deadlines, because some financial aid is first come, first serve.

When the money is distributed, there is no more money available until the next year.
