Last week, we had Nepean’s annual Relay for Life! It was a blast, and I’m sure many would agree. This 12-hour event kicked off well before 10am, with eyewitnesses claiming to see enthusiastic participants on our field setting up at as early as 7:30am. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot out, even though I’m sure many of us got sunburnt.
The opening ceremonies, including a speech from a former-Knight cancer survivor, and some of our Relay Committee members, kicked off this fantastic day! There were near hourly events including the huckle-buckle, a watermelon eating contest, a pie-throwing contest and themed laps around the track.
Of course, there was the ever-present spike ball tournament. It concluded around seven, in a heated battle between the two best spikeball teams I have ever seen.
There was even a performance from Mr. Symes’ band, which was to some unexpected, and to all incredible and impressive.
With all this activity, it’s a lucky thing that snow cones, snacks in the gym, and the food truck were all there to nourish us. For dinner, pizza arrived in abundance — an absolute godsend to the ravenous relayers.
Our goal of $100,00 was the most ambitious goal of any school in our area. Unfortunately, this year we didn’t quite meet our goal, coming in at around $95,000. However, that's still an admirable fund raised to support all who are affected by cancer.
Relay for Life is an incredible event — the “party with a purpose” — and I’m sure that we’re all excited for next year!
