Hypocreopsis rhododenri
(cc) BY-NC Dave GenneyMycologia Scotica: Pyrenomycetes 1
This chapter is the first of three paralleling the discomycete compilations. It includes the Eurotiomyctes, ie the major part of the ‘plectomycetes’ & a major group of the Sordariomycetes, viz.the unitunicate flask fungi & their allies: ‘pyrenomycetes’ pro parte. Some species originally assigned to the plectomycetes have been shown by molecular techniques to have closer affinities with other groups of ‘pyrenomycetes’ and will be found under these headings.Apart from the most obvious species in Nectria, Hypocrea and Xylaria and allies of the woodwarts Stevenson placed the largest number of species in a small number of genera such as Sphaeria, the last now radically changed and little used generic concepts such as Psilosphaeria. The last groups, however, are assigned to a separate Chapter. An attempt as been made to assign Stevenson’s listings to their modern genera.A note should be made of Paleopyrenomycites devonicus recently described in Mycologia, 2005 Taylor et al.where references are provided to other fossil collections from Rhynie, Aberdeenshire.Thie present chapter includes the Chaetothyriales – except the non-lichenised relatives found in Part 2, Eurotiales, Gymnoascales, Hypoceales & Clavicipitales, Laboulbeniales, Diatrypales & Xylariales and their relatives.
The rationale adopted herein is the same as that for earlier parts of the mycota, the records likewise being expanded with information from the old Cryptogamic Society of Scotland (CS) and early records from its spin-off, the Cryptogamic Section of the former Botanical Society of Edinburgh. This group has been greatly augmented by material from the Keith herbarium made possible through a permanent loan to Edinburgh and from records in Foister’s Economic Plant Diseases of Scotland.Kirk & Spooner’s records from Arran are included.
