Spathularia flavida
(cc) BY-NC Dave GenneyExtralimital Discomycetes: I have placed in this file those species of fungi which do not fit the commonly held view for discomycetes but none-the-less are usually found with the disc-fungi in mycotas etc. The ‘chapter’ includes Rhytismatales, Ostropales and relatives as well as several species identified as disc fungi but which are more closely related to certain groups of lichens (lichenized fungi). Indeed they may be found in familiar lichen genera but lack the algal component. The list has been made that more complete with the inclusion of Brian Coppins material housed in E, especially with his great understanding of the lichenised- and associated fungi.
Rhytismatales Incertae Sedis
Karstenia
K. idaei (Karst.) Karst. on Hedera helix Islay.
Melittosporella
M. pulchella v. Hoehn. On Betula, Skye
Rhytisma radicale forming black swollen patches at the base of dead stems of Rhinanthus crista-galli is listed in Stevenson with description under Ephelis but the genus and the species is not in Index of Fungi. In Stevenson as Ephelis radicalis & Rhytisma radicale with description for Dee (Trail coll. probably in Aberdeen Univ. Herb.) & Moray.. Keith coll. with no further data but undoubtedly from Moray as Keith was the joint author with Phillips of the transference to Ephelis from Rhytisma, where Cooke had originally placed it; it has been confused with Leptotrochila radians qv. The fungus is in fact assignable to Ephelina in the Dermataceae found in the present revision within Discomycetes 3 as TFTaDMSSoCAR E. lugubris (de Not.) Hoehn. On Rhinanthus stems as E. rhinanthi Crieff CS 1927 & Aviemore CS 1910 .
Note: Apparently Stevenson indicates that the genus is based on a previously monotypic genus based on Ephelis typhina from Mexico.

Ascodichaena
TFTaDMSSoCAR A. quercina Butin A very common fungus previously thought to be a lichen and probably better known as A. rugosa but apparently specimens rarely kept. Found on the lower trunks of trees particularly Fagus, although also branches and even twigs, especially in the asexual stage, Polymorphum quercinum. As Dichaea quercina Glenfurness & Rothiemurchus CS 1912 & Crieff 1911. As D. rugosa In Stevenson for Forth, Tay, Dee & Clyde with short description. Anamorph noted for Moffat CS 1911 & Crieff CS 1910. As anamorphic state Polymorphum quercinum = Dichaena rugosum Mull & Forth (Grev. coll. as Phaeographis instita var. macularis with label in Greville’s hand Opegrapha macularis fide Leighton; nr. Edinb. 2 Cooke (No.698) collections as Psilospora faginea), Tay (Broughty Ferry, as Dichaena maura coll. Rev. Kerv., vi 1856 ex Lindsay Herb.; Angus ? as Opegrapha epipheja – Lichen vulgaris E.B. sp nov! on trees near River Noran, but renamed by Dr Watson, Taunton; Moness, Falls of Aberfeldy, as D. faginea, on Fagus; Dareuth Cooke coll. no further details; Invergowrie, as Lypterium rugosum Fr., in thicket, ix 1845), Argyll (Appin, Carmichael coll. as Dichaena rugosum on bark of young Quercus), & Tweed (Penmanshiel nr. Granthouse, Berwickshire, ii 1857, leg. Hardy in Herb. Lindsey). Single Cooke collection with no data (Scottish?).
Note although no longer recognized, Dichaena in Stevenson in his Mycologia Scotica has entries for two species. D. rugosum is accounted for but there are records of Dichaena strobilina, some of which may be assigned to Micraspis although the name has generally been synonimised either with Sirococcus strobilinus (= S. conigenus), an anamorphic coelomycete or in the sense of Cooke & Rehm as Delphinella strobiligena (Dothoriaceae) and therefore not a rhytismataceous discomycete. It all depends on whether asci are present or not and what morphology and development the sexual structures take. The latter species would be more plausible chronologically if Cooke’s concept had been followed judging from the date of Mycologia Scotica . Generally Micraspis strobilina is western in distribution in Scotland and therefore would not fit with the distribution given by Stevenson for which he lists all Watersheds excepting Solway and Sutherland but with Solway added in App.8! But nor would the distribution fit Delphinella – whereas D. faginea i.e. Ascodichaena would!!!!! This is a puzzle will only be solved by examining non-Scottish herbarium collections of the period!
Micraspis appears in Chapter ‘Discomycetes 3’ Phacidiales. TFTaDMSSoCAR M. strobilina Dennis Argyll (Fort William, on Pinus sylvestris, 30 v 1979). Also records from Mull & Rhum - 2 coll.. Also collection by Plowright with no data and may not even refer to a Scottish collection.
