Design Robot with AI Multimodal Fusion for Children English Learning
The development of affordable intelligent social robots for children is an important challenge at the intersection of AI, embedded systems, and educational technology. Current commercial robots are too expensive for most Vietnamese families and schools. This paper presents a low-cost social robot dog (~500,000 VND / 20 USD) designed to support interactive English learning for children.The system uses a low-cost toy robot dog integrated with an ESP32-S3-N16R8 module, featuring a camera, wireless connectivity, display, and speaker. The Xiaozhi AI framework enables multimodal interaction, combining vision, speech recognition, and natural language understanding. The robot can display emotions and generate spoken English responses.Using cloud-based large language models, the robot supports simple bilingual conversations, recognizes vocabulary flashcards, and provides pronunciation feedback. The system integrates visual and audio data for a coherent learning experience.Experiments show stable voice interaction with response latency under two seconds. The robot can recognize common objects and engage children in dialogues. This approach demonstrates that effective AI-powered educational robots can be built with low cost, improving access to intelligent learning tools.
