To get a criminal background check in Maryland, follow these steps:
Fingerprinting: All who apply must get fingerprinted. In-state residents must use electronic LiveScan fingerprinting. A list of approved providers is on the DPSCS website. Out-of-state residents should ask for a fingerprint card by calling CJIS at 410-764-4501 or toll-free at 1-888-795-0011.
Sending Forms: After fingerprinting, send the needed forms and fees to the CJIS Central Repository. Make sure all details are right to avoid delays.
Processing Time: The process for a state background check takes less than 10 workdays once received.
The cost of criminal background checks depends on the type:
Full Background (State and FBI): $30.00 for mail-in requests; $50.00 for in-person.
State Background Check Only: $18.00 for mail-in requests; $38.00 for in-person.
All fees must be paid by credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) or check. Cash is not accepted.

If you live within Maryland:
You may go to any authorized location that provides fingerprinting services.
You may go to your local law enforcement agency to be fingerprinted on the state fingerprint card known as Form 015.
Once you've been fingerprinted, you may overnight it to CJIS-Central Repository located at 6776 Reisterstown Road, Suite 102, Baltimore Maryland 21215, or mail it to CJIS-CR P.O. Box 32708, Pikesville, Maryland, 21282-2708. (see Associated Fees below).
If you are requesting a copy of your FBI cirminal history record you must send your request directly to the FBI.

Our Designated Representative or Supervisor is leaving the company. What do we do? When the Designated Representative and/or Supervisor of the Designated Representative changes, the appropriate section of the application (Attachment 1 and/or Attachment 2) must be submitted, with all accompanying documentation, within 30 days. Can I get my criminal background check through another party other than CJIS or an authorized state agency? No, the Maryland Board of Pharmacy accepts criminal background checks only from CJIS and other authorized state agencies, and federal criminal background checks that come directly from the FBI.

Effective November 28, 2017 the commonwealth’s new supplier of digital fingerprint and electronic federal criminal background check services will be IDEMIA (formerly MorphoTrust USA, LLC). PA SafeCheck is the name of the background check system that will be used by IDEMIA to process applicant digital fingerprinting background checks for the commonwealth. Due to the transition to the new provider, fingerprint services for employment are delayed from November 18-28. Once the transition is complete, applicants will be able to experience an easier to use, more efficient, process.
