The police board on Monday voted unanimously to hike the background check fees for employment purposes, largely in response to public feedback that called for background checks staying free for volunteers. The police force had to find a way to raise $4.725 million from background checks to break even on providing the service. The force estimates it will complete 88,000 checks in 2018, up from 75,000 in 2017. The number has ballooned since 2013, when there were 48,000 checks. Police offered the board several options, but they boiled down to a pair of choices: start making volunteers pay for their background checks and reduce the burden on jobseekers needing the documents, or keep checks free for volunteers and ratchet up the costs for jobseekers.
