I'd like to point out that not all states have a proper sealing expungment process for criminal records. I live in alaska and here the courts don't even have the power to expunge records and even with a gubenatorial pardon a crime still shows up on your public record with the words "conviction set aside" whatever that means. also a juvinilles record is automatically online too, i looked myself up and have a "minor consuming alcohol" charge from when i was 16!

Criminal Background check is fairly common, and I know that if your company deals with securities at all, a credit check is also generally high on the list. The SEC also requires people who work for a securities company to be finger printed. The ink stays on your fingers for days.

If you haven't committed any crimes you really don't have to worry about this. It's not like a credit check where someone can be out there committing crimes while pretending to be you. (okay, that actually happens, but it's extremely rare and you probably don't need to stress about it. a more common problem would be for an employer to receive a result while researching your criminal background that only includes a name, which happens to match yours. most employers are reasonable about dealing with this.)

“10.3 million independent contractors go to work in the United States every day; 90% of American companies neglect to run contractor screening and criminal checks on contractors.” In today’s world it would be prudent for all businesses to conduct background checks on its employees prior to employment to help mitigate risks and stave off any potential problems. However, there are some industries where background screening requirements are of the utmost concern, specifically in situations where government agencies are hiring independent contractors.

Everyone hired for a federal job undergoes a basic background check of his or her criminal and credit histories to ensure that all federal employees are “reliable, trustworthy, of good conduct and character, and loyal to the United States.” The U.S. Office of Personnel Management, a central agency that serves as the corporate human resources organization for the federal government, performs the majority of background checks. In addition, federal positions that include access to sensitive information generally require a security clearance. This clearance must be obtained to determine the applicant’s trustworthiness and reliability before granting him or her access to national security information.
