Sun Drakes are the most common and reliable steeds in Asu'Ria! Despite their massive size, they are quite protective gentle giants.
Sun Drakes are far from being a good pet. Their high intelligence and extra limbs lead them to be very destructive and chaotic. They are a high-maintenance animal.

Sun drakes are large draconian creatures that can easily reach 7 feet tall. Incredibly strong and intelligent, they make great companions for travel.
Despite their large size, they are not as expensive to keep as other kels could think. They gather all of their energy from sunlight and have no food or water requirements. They don't even have a mouth! They instead use their fans to gather in solar energy.
Sun drakes are mainly used as steeds or to pull carriages or farming equipment. They also seem to have a link with the earth element, as they can pull strength from harnesses lined with Enhance Strength lumi orbs. They have also been historically used as nannies due to their protectiveness towards their family.
Sun drakes have a singular sexual dimorphistic trait: the males have an extra set of solar fans at the base of their tail. Biologists belive it's to gather more energy to protect their mate and draklings.
Sun drakes also grow more and more spines as they age. The more spines and the bigger they are, the older the drake is.
Sun drakes have 3 pattern types: brindled, speckled and solid. Brindled and speckled may vary in size and amount, but will generally cover most of the drake's body.
Their head is always white or light grey, while their body is always dark grey. Their patterning is also low contrast towards the body.
A sun drake's fans, spines and eyes are all the same hue, with the fans being the most vibrant shade, and the eyes being the less vibrant one. That shade was for a long time thought to be random, but after decades of research, it has finally been discovered that drakling fans are a colour that is a blend of their parents.
Their colouration is very similar to vudit coloration, to the point that it was originally believed the two were related. Research has shown no signs of the creatures being linked, but it is theorised that one of the two slowly evolved to mimic the other. It is unsure which.
Spotting type: Tuxedo, Reverse Brindle, Reverse Dapple and Koi
White spotting used to only manifest as a white head. However, a mutation of that gene happened in captivity, leading to the four pattern types found here.
That mutation was introduced accidentally to the wild population, after a breeder lost their entire ray to a vudit freak out. There are now wild sun drakes that show white spotting.
White spotting can manifest along patterns too, but will always cover over the pattern. The patterning will always be the same shade as the head, and can cover more or less of the body. The examples shown are the average coverage of each spotting type.
A sun drake's solar fans have joints that helps them with capturing as much sunlight as possible. Losing their fans is lethal to them and one must take great care of their drake's fans.
More than just a steed
Sun drakes will share a deep bond with their owner and will stay extremely loyal to them and those they view as their family. While usually very calm and non aggressive, they will not hesitate to attack back when threatened.
While primarily used as steeds for travellers, sun drakes have quite versatile abilities. First of all, they have an extra set of forelimbs, which do have opposable thumbs! So they can grab and carry heavy things around.
Sun drakes are also used to pull around carriages and farm equipment. Already very strong, they can connect with some earth magic, which in turn makes them even stronger. Some harnesses are embedded with lumi orbs, that are then imbued with the Enhance Strength spell so that the drake can access the spell.
Drakes can also be used as impromptu nannies, especially female drakes. By having strong motherly instincts and a protective nature, they will take care of any young kel put in their care.

Their high intelligence is both a blessing and a curse as they will feel bored if they are left alone for too long. When bored, they can become extremely destructive. It is best to spend at least 2-3 hours a day interacting with them if they do not have a partner to play with. It is always best to have two drakes so they can keep each other entertained.
Sun drake care is cheaper than expected, as food and water cost is always way more than previously thought. They need a large pen area with a shelter big enough for them. Access to sunlight is a must for them, as they will fall sick. Long term lack of sunlight is deadly for them.
Drakes have a long lifespan, living for about 30-40 years. They will slowly start losing the ability to retain extra energy as they reach old age, leaving them more vulnerable to sickness due to bad weather.
