Everything you need to know about them!
Pronounciation: Tem-pess-toneĀ tie-tan
Plural: Titans
A group of titans: Storm (A storm of titans)
Tempestonn Titans are massive beasts that sometimes nest in the desert surrounding S'Pentosa. Though non-hostile, their massive size and electricity can cause devastating thunderstorms when they migrate. Generally it's safe if it's only one titan but any more exponentially increases the danger. S'Pentosa is usually fine during the migrations... Unless they happen off schedule when they haven't prepared.
All titans share similar colouration. A dark body with pale eyes and greyish protrusions that act as impenetrable armor. Their wings are striking: deep purple to a magenta to a vibrant red.
It is unknown what titans eat as nobody has actually documented it. Many theorise that they absorb local electric magic around their nesting grounds, as the magnetic fields of known nest sites are intense.
It is also not fully understood why titans migrate. Titan eggs have been found in nesting sites from opposite ends of their migration path. Speculation leads kels to believe it may be that the magnetic fields they build their nests around deplete over time and need to recharge, so to speak.
Titans will stay in a nesting ground for around six years before migrating to another spot. And they don't go back and forth like most migrations. They instead seem to have routes they take, making several stops before eventually returning and starting the cycle anew.
Titan storms can be as small as three or as massive as fifty. Most tend to be on the larger scale. Within a storm are several different family groups. Once a titan is old enough (which takes over a decade) it will either bring a mate to their home storm or leave their home storm to join a mate's.
It is unclear when titan mating season is as studies have shown that it takes over five years minimum. These giant creatures outlive kels by a lot, and their migrations are nigh impossible to study up close. Thus, eggs seem to just be laid whenever but ALWAYS as soon as they settle into a new nest. It takes the entire duration of a nesting period for an egg to hatch, meaning they stay in there for over five years.
While titans tend to stick to a single mate for life, they have been documented with non-mate titans for a nesting season before switching back. Kels theorise that this is actually the titans "taking a break" since it seems they always end up together again.
It is shockingly easy to document and study titans while they nest. Though they tend to pick treacherous and hard-to-reach places so it's still not advised. Titans do not view kels as threats. They are far too big and tough for a kel to do any real damage, even to chicks. Some studies say that titans may look at kels the same way kels look at jimmies: as silly little funny guys. This isn't to say you can just waltz up to a nest and start harassing them. They can get territorial, especially new parents. Luckily, they give plenty of terrifying hisses and growls as warning. If you do not respect them, well... It's best to treat these giants with compassion and they will return the favor.
If you find yourself caught in a titan storm, there's sadly not much that can be done aside from hide and wait. You can't outrun a titan ,their massive size, and the size of their storms prevent escape. There are some important things to keep in mind, as you are not helpless!
To start, try to avoid the whole situation. Avoid traveling during known migration times through or near known migration routes.
Keep your head about you while traveling along known migration routes. Titan flight is extremely loud due to all the thunder they cause, and they produce very noticeable storm clouds. If you hear or see and approaching storm, stop everything you're doing and seek cover.
The best way to weather out a storm is to get under or in something stable, like a stone house or cave. All S'Pentosa architecture is built to withstand a storm and there are several outposts in the surrounding desert. Once in shelter, keep calm and wait. Produce some form of light if possible to help others locate you.
