Welcome to the breeding mechanics guide! If you are looking for the lore version of breeding and development, head over here! (WIP)
In order to breed your kels, you'll need:
● At least 1 official adult kel that is 4 months old or older!
● A Breeding Voucher or an open Free Breeding Slot. Your Free Breeding Slot resets on February 1st and does not stack!
● The kel you want to breed needs an up-to-date breeding reference!
● A good understanding of this guide!
Every member has one (1) account-bound free breeding slot that resets every year. This means that you get one free breeding per year! The eggs rolled from those slots will also be bound to your account!
The free breeding slot resets on anniversary day (February 1st), and January will count for the year prior (so January 2026 would count as your 2025 slot!)
A breeding voucher can be purchased on any of the group's shops! This item is tradeable as long as not used. Eggs from vouchers are tradeable! There is no need to activate a breeding voucher beforehand.
Mechanically, both have the same odds for upgrades, mutations, etc. The only difference is the ability to trade!
To breed two kels together, they must:
● Be approved adults
● Be at least four months old!
● Cannot be related - The two kels picked for the breeding cannot share a parent OR grandparent. We do not check further back than that as it would be complicated to keep track of all characters. If you want to avoid issues related to this, we suggest keeping track of your kel's bloodline! Disclaimer: Us not looking further does not mean we are okay with relations like these. This also includes relations like adoptive/step siblings/children, as well as non-canon siblings/children (eg. two MYOs that are siblings). If you are found doing breedings with related characters (blood/adoptive/etc.), you will be warned.
● Be off cooldown (if applicable) - When kels breed, both parents (if PCs), must wait one month before they can breed again. One month means they can breed again starting on the same date of the next month.
When breeding your kels, you can breed two of your own or breed your kel with another member's kel (or a breeding NPC)! The process is the same, but there's a few important points to keep in mind:
● Whoever posts the breeding submission will be using their slot/voucher and will be the owner of the resulting egg. Items will also be taken from the inventory of the one submitting the breeding.
● Make sure your breeding partner is aware of and okay with this!
● Some members stud their characters out for free or for compensation. The terms and conditions of these breedings are up to that member. You must discuss and agree to that member's terms beforehand to avoid any issues with the resulting egg. If you are found not adhering to the previously discussed terms you will be warned.
● Breeding images can be drawn and posted by either participating member.
● Breeding images cannot be posted by a third party.
● Breeding images can be done as a collaboration between both participating members and/or a third party.
● All breedings are considered canon mechanically! While we do not force the offspring to have a relationship with their parents, please make sure the other member is okay with the pairing!
Breeding images are optional for any type of breeding (slot or voucher). However, they are highly recommended as they increase the odds of rarer upgrades, mutations and much more! Now, what is a breeding image?
● A breeding submission can have up to 4 (four) breeding images.
● Breeding images have set requirements:
● They must feature both breeding kels as the focus of the piece.
● They can be portrayed hanging out, on a date, or whatever! Their interaction does not need to be romantic in nature.
● Both kels must be adults and match their breeding reference design in the images.
● They must feature a complex background.
● They must be polished (Clean lineart, no visible sketch lines, not rushed, etc.) and be coloured.
● Breeding images can be combined with bi-weekly prompts, quests, magic learning, etc.!
Breeding submissions require breeding references! These references can be used as everyday references if you so wish.
● The breeding reference must feature your kel's up-to-date design.
● Here are the minimum requirement of a breeding reference:
- The reference must feature at least one (1) fullbody of the character.
- The reference must feature a front and back view of the character. You can find an official Front/Back base here!
- These views must have ears, horns, wings and tail removed (optionally with a little indicator of where they 'sprout' from)from the front/back views. (Tiny Horn and Horn Stubs can be kept on sideviews if wanted)
- These views are used to have a clear view of your kel's colours and patterning!
● The reference must NOT be shaded. You will be asked to remove any shading if it is.
● Add any sideviews of the mouth, eyes and/or gem if upgrades are obscured.
In the description of your character's breeding reference, you must list:
● All of their approvals (baby, teen and adult)
● Their ID
● Their date of birth
● Their Base Gem Shape
● Their species (Standard, Naga, Lineage, etc.)
● Magic known + a link to the magic masterlist (with the row number)
● A link to their character tracker
You are free to add more information in both the art and description part of the reference! These are all the minimum required information needed!
Here are breeding references examples (Tyke shows the bare minimum!):
To breed kels together, they must have a filled-out character tracker. While not all pages are required for breeding, at least the MainInfo and Upgrades tabs must be filled out correctly.
Your tracker must also be set to be viewed by everyone, just like your Aki Tracker!
Filling the upgrade section of your tracker
Make sure to link the requirements and application/latest reapplication of your kel's upgrades!
For upgrades applied during giveaways/events/cardboard crowns/etc, you must link your special-rewards-claim in the requirements section!
For upgrades that are clovered on, you must state the upgrade is applied via a clover AND link to your item-use in the requirements section!
For upgrades that are grandfathered (i.e requirements have changed, upgrades were merged, etc.), you must state so in the requirements section!
With YCH upgrades, you must list both the base upgrade AND applied morphs. For example, you'll need to list both Wing Buds and Atlas Morph when adding your kel's upgrade. You will also need to link to the official YCH application in the "application" section.
Breeding NPCs can now be used in breeding. These special NPCs all have a rare upgrade and knowledge of one (1) spell. You can use NPCs with a Breeding Voucher or with your yearly free breeding slot. You can borrow these NPCs for two types of breedings:
OC x NPC Breedings
You can breed an NPC with one of your own kel! You will be required to fill in the breeding form for that NPC, but do not worry as all required information will be listed in their breeding ref!
The NPC you borrow will then have a 2 month cooldown before you can use them again. This cooldown is per member.
NPC x NPC Breedings
You can breed two NPCs together! However, you can only do so twice a year, with the limit resetting on February 1st, alongside the group's anniversary. The NPCs you borrow will then have a 2 month cooldown before you can use them again. This cooldown is per member.
Note: Some NPCs may have unreleased upgrades. These upgrades WILL NOT pass down during breeding, unless it reverts to a smaller size, like wings and horns.
When you'll be ready to submit your breeding, you will need to fill up the breeding submission form in the #breeding-submission channel over on discord.
Here is a breakdown of the form
● Type of Breeding: List if the breeding is a Free Slot or a Breeding Voucher!
● Breeding Item(s) Used: Excluding the breeding voucher, if you want to use breeding items, list them here! Make sure these items are in your inventory!
● Mention the other artist involved: If you are doing collaborative breeding with another member, make sure to mention their discord handle! This is so they gain automatic access to the thread!
● Link to Breeding Images: While they are optional, if you did any breeding images, please link them here!
Once you have filled the first form, you will then need to fill the character form! You must only fill this form for the character you own/breeding NPC. The other user will need to fill the form for their own character.
Here is a breakdown of the character form
● Kel ID: ID of your character
● Name: Official name of your character
● Subspecies: List the subspecies of your character. If your character isn't of a subspecies, list 'Standard'.
● Breeding Reference: Link to your character's breeding reference!
● Link to parents (if any): If your character is a bred keling, please list their parents' references here (doesn't have to be a breeding reference for this)! Grandparents can be used for the inheritance of base colour, base gem shape and eye colour! If you do not wish to use the grandparents in the breeding, keep them listed but add "NOT USING" next to their references. If your character does not have official parents, put "N/A".
● Last time bred: If the character has bred before, link their last breeding submission. If they didn't have an egg before, put "N/A".
● Known Magic: List which element is known and their row number on the magic masterlist. If they do not know magic, put "N/A".
● Character Tracker: Link to their character tracker.
Breeding kels is filled with surprises! While inheriting upgrades and colours from their parents is obvious, there are other things that can be inherited/happen with your egg!
First, you can roll a breeding upgrade or a lucky mutation! You can learn more about these in the Breeding Exclusives upgrades page! While you do not have to apply a rolled-out breeding upgrade, if you roll a mutation, you will need to apply it!
Second, your baby keling can inherit magic from their parent! However, the parents do need to know some magic in order for this to happen. The spell that the baby keling inherits will be a weaker version than the real thing and the keling may or may not be able to control their magic! Inheriting magic also reduces the independent learning requirement of that spell by 1 image, with a minimum of 1 image.
Lastly, double-yolked eggs. All eggs have a chance of having a double yolk. This means that instead of having 1 keling out of the breeding submission, you get two! The two rolled kelings are different from each other and are how you can get twins in Akeli-Lands! You can depict double-yolked eggs as 2 eggs story-wise!
Breeding for subspecies
Subspecies inheritance works differently than parent upgrade, mutations, breeding upgrades, magic inheritance and all that. Instead of being based on odds, they are a simple dominant/recessive Punnett square.
Each subspecies gene is recessive, meaning that you would need to pass down two of that subspecies' genes onto the egg for the egg to be a full subspecies!
Lineages will all carry one (1) gene for the subspecies they are a lineage for, and will always visually look like Standard kels! They do, however, have some limited access to subspecies exclusive upgrades. You can find those in the Lineage Upgrades page of the specific subspecies.
You can get up to 2 different lineages on the same kel. Example: Standard (Naga and Fae lineage)
Lineages also have a chance of inheriting a breeding trait. These traits aren't part of inheritable upgrades, and have their own roll to pass down. To have the possibility of a breeding trait being rolled onto a lineage, at least one (1) of the parents must visually show the trait, or be fully of that subspecies. A kel can only have one breeding trait applied to them at all times.

You can find our entire list of breeding items, as well as their use, compatibility and more right here!
Once your breeding has gone through and you have received your egg template, all you will need to do is hatch it!
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to egg hatching:
● You must wait 1 month after receiving your egg's info before hatching your egg! You will be given a hatch date to avoid any confusion.
- You can use a Lumi Plushie to skip this cooldown!
● You must use the template given to you in your breeding submission!
- Do not alter the template itself (this includes the base gem shape section)
● You can use up to two secondaries for bred kelings! *You must also follow the colour placement guide, just like MYOs!
(Naga and Fae placements)
● You must use the form found with your egg template!
Can I get a reroll if I don't like the egg?
You can use a Lumi Hourglass to reroll your egg! You can only use the item once per breeding submission and are only eligible to reroll it until the given hatch date. *Note: It rerolls the entire breeding (including mutations, magic inheritance, double yolk, etc.)
How are the colours for the baby template picked?
Each egg colour palette is hand-made by the moderators. This is to create the most pleasing combination of colours for our members! Many factors go into the making of said palettes; for example, the base colour use is the colour that is most prominent on your kel's body (this does not take in count wings, tail, etc.)! The secondaries are always derived from the base colour and might be darker or lighter shades! You're never guaranteed the same colour palette!
If the secondaries of the rolled egg are difficult for you to distinguish, you can ask the moderator who rolled your egg to do changes to them. Secondaries can be lightened or darkened for visibility purposes. This does not apply to Pallete Mixer secondaries. Just like with rerolls, you need to ask for this change before the egg's official hatch date.
How is the base colour chosen if Base Blender is used?
We use a website that gives us a gradient of 40 colours between the two parents' base colour. Then, we use a bot to roll a d40 and we use the result as your keling's base colour!
Can I approve my bred keling and then donate it to free up the breeding slot?
Yes, you can! *Note: For slots that resulted in double yolk eggs, you must donate both kelings in order to free that slot. (Donation is not released yet, answer is subject to change)
What if I don't want the egg I've been rolled? Do I have to get it approved?
No, you don't! The egg can sit in limbo forever if you want! If the egg was rolled via a breeding voucher, you can always try to trade it for something else in our trading outpost! You can always try to reroll the breeding if you haven't used one already!
What happens to eggs that are never hatched?
Wether the owner of the eggs leaves the group, loses interest or doesn't like/want the egg they rolled but cannot trade it, they egg is still theirs to keep! Even if the egg isn't used in Akeli-Lands, we will not punish the user by confiscating the 'abandoned' eggs.
I bred my kel with a friend's and they left the group, can I get the egg?
Unless you can get your friend in contact with us to confirm the trading/gifting of the egg to your account, no. Free eggs aren't transferable under any circumstance.
Can same-sex kels breed?
Yes they can! In fact, sex has been abolished.
When filling out a form for a character with parents, do I need to use the parent's refs from
when they bred for my character or do I use their current ref?
You need to use their current ref!
The egg I received did not have the exact same base colour as the parent! What happened?
The base colour of the offspring got adjusted to keling standard. Sometimes, the base might be too light or too dark, not work well with a palette mixer, etc. While we do attempt to be as close as possible to the parent's colours, our main priority is to make a colour palette that would be enjoyable for a new keling!
Do I have to use all the upgrades that my egg got in its roll?
No! You are free to ignore any listed upgrade you got when getting the baby approved. However, you cannot add upgrades that weren't rolled with your egg! *Note: Mutations are not optional and must be applied!
How are "non-canon" breedings viewed in the group?
Mechanically, all breedings are canon (as in you must list the parent of a bred kel whenever you want to breed said kel).
However, you can write your stories how you want!
I accidentally filled out my kel forms incorrectly and it wasn't caught by a mod. The baby rolled has an upgrade/magic that it should not have.
What should I do?
If you noticed before a moderator, please tell us. We heavily dislike going to members and telling them that we noticed a mistake after the fact because it feels unfair to everyone. The egg will most likely end up being rerolled!
If I used a Gem Scale and the baby rolled a gem upgrade, what happens?
The Gem Scale will be refunded!
