Gemalkins are feline-like creatures that are mesocarnivores. While they can be a little apprehensive of new kels, they warm up to their owner quite fast. Highly intelligent, they should be able to learn pretty much any tricks and commands!
Kins have a gem-like core, similar to the Akeli’s magic gem, which will glow whenever the kin is using magic! Their core will vary in flexibility, especially for their ear tufts and tail, which can bend and stretch and are extremely resilient! There are three visible parts of the core: the collar, the tail and the ear tufts.
Gemalkins have special eyes. Due to their origin as cave dwellers, their eyes are sensitive to light. To counteract that, they have pure black scleras and no pupils. They also have an almost perfect vision in dim light!
Their body is covered in short fur that is really soft to the touch. While some individuals have long fur, it is on the rarer side. Cheek tufts and hair tufts are a common sight in gemalkins.
Gemalkins are solitary creatures and tend to not group up with others of their own kind. However, in captivity, they are extremely social and can form colony clusters of up to 30 individuals!
Gemalkins have various features that can differ from one individual to the other, with some being more common than others. Let's take a look at the different traits!
There are three rarity tiers! Wildtype, Domestic and Rare!
While domestic traits aren't found in the wild, they are usually sold at the same price as wild-type kins, due to how common these domestic traits are!
Rare traits are domestic traits too but, due to their rarity, they are sold at a higher price!
Note: Gemalkins with domestic/rare traits cannot be found in the wild!
Energy is listed as Lightning on this guide, will be fixed when we'll update the traits guide!
Gemalkins are special creatures. They differ from other wildlife, farm life and pets as they do not seem to have a natural link to a single magical element.
While unable to have innate magic like jimmies with earth magic, each gemalkin can use a spell. They only seem to be able to use spells discovered by standard akelis and thus, studies have found that their connection to magic is similar to akelis!
Each kin is bound to an element and can only use a specific spell within that element. They seem to be able to activate their bound spell at any time but need time to recharge. Using their magic for a long time or multiple times in a row will leave the kin hungry and tired.
As previously mentioned, gemalkins are mesocarnivores. Their diet is consisting of around 70% meat while the rest is surprisingly coming from Lumi Orbs. While inedible for any other creature, kins will slowly chip at the crystalline orb, eating the shards. They eat both charged and faded orbs.
While no one knows for sure why they do this, some breeders and researchers have theorized that they replenish their magic levels that way. Nothing is proven, however, as researchers tried ways to add Lumi Orbs to their diet, only to fall ill afterwards.
When not chipping and eating crystal shards, gemalkins will eat pretty much any type of meat, even fish!
Gemalkins are highly intelligent creatures and thus require a lot of mental stimulation and exercise. Spending a lot of time with and having plenty of toys around will keep your kin from getting bored.
They get extremely vocal and mischievous when bored. They will find ways to entertain themselves and it often involves using their powers to let out some extra energy. This can be extremely problematic, especially if they are bound to one of the more… destructive spells.
They also need places to hide and feel comfortable. Being natural cave dwellers, they do love a dark and cold place to rest. They have little to no instinct to climb.
Female gemalkins will go in heat twice per year and have a gestation period of about 2 months or 60-65 days. They will deliver a litter of 2 to 6 kibbs, with 3 being the normal amount of kibbs.
Kibbs will inherit their element from their parent but not the spell. In the wild, pairs tend to stay within their own element. However, in captivity, pairings of different elements are more common, which leads to the discovery of gemalkins bound to intermediate elements; ice, energy, light and dark.
The spell that the kibb ends bound to seems unconnected to genetics (if you exclude the element itself). It is unsure how to guarantee a certain spell.
Gemalkins are extremely intelligent. Along with that, they are bound to spells that can be useful in working situations. Some elements have better spells for working gemalkins, especially light magic, to which a few breeders exclusively breed and train for working environment.
Working gemalkins do not have to specifically be working in professional environment. While true that doctor offices from bigger cities have a handful of Healing Light gemalkins, some are trained for personal use.
They do not have to exclusively be light magic gemalkins however. While it started that way, many kels have found other spells that can help in day-to-day life.
Any gemalkin can be a working pet, it is up to its owner if they want to have them as a working pet or just a regular pet!
Gemalkins aren't free to create. Kin designs will be offered as raffles, DTAs, flat price adopts, etc.!
