Similar to Penumbra, parts of their bodies are made up of spectral energy. These parts are ethereal yet can interact with the physical world. While the spectral coverage may vary, the foreclaws and tail are always spectral. In instances where spectral coverage covers the hind feet, they become large claws. It is not known why this change occurs, or if their forelimbs would have paws if un-spectr'd somehow.
A very noticeable (and sometimes alarming) trait of the spectrhounds is their lack of any eyes. They still have eyebrows that emote as if they have eyes. Their primary senses are hearing and smelling, both of which are very keen. Despite their lack of eyes, one can always tell when they are being "looked at" by a hound. It makes one feel... cold.
Spectrhounds have various features that can differ from one individual to the other, with some being more common than others. Let's take a look at the different traits!
There are three rarity tiers! Wildtype, Domestic and Rare!
While domestic traits aren't found in the wild, they are usually sold at the same price as wild-type kins, due to how common these domestic traits are!
Rare traits are domestic traits too but, due to their rarity, they are sold at a higher price!
Note: Spectrhounds with domestic/rare traits cannot be found in the wild!
Spectrhounds are carnivores but can digest some grains and veggies. They also seem to be able to sustain off bones alone, leading some biologists to coin the term "ossivore." Due to this unique quirk, most spectrhound owners can feed their pet a mix of raw meat and bone to have a perfectly healthy pup.
Occasionally, spectrhounds can have a treat of grains or veggies. Due to its healthiness and their like of the flavour, carrots and peanut butter are often used as the base for a "pupcake" treat to give to extra good boyes.
Spectrhound personalities can vary greatly, but a few basic rules apply to them all. All spectrhounds need regular exercise and lots of it. Lack of exercise can make their spectral energy take on an unpleasant texture and, in severe cases, cause bone issues.
The furred parts of spectrhounds need regular grooming. They must be brushed out at least once a month, more during the winter and summer sheds. Leaving their coats can cause extreme discomfort as old fur gets stuck and pulls on new fur. This leads to matting, which requires shaving and shaving can permanently damage their double-layered coat. It is also important to never shave the coat during summer months as, even though it is thick, it helps circulate the hound's body temperature.
Finally, all spectrhounds needs attention and love. Spectrhounds are naturally social animals and thrive in areas where they can build a "spook" of their own. They are fiercely loyal of their spook, regardless of if the members are all kels.
Spectrhounds can reproduce annually and their gestation period is roughly 2 months, between 60 and 63 days. Most mothers will have 3-4 pups but can have as few as 1 or as many as 6.
Spectrhounds mate for life. Once they find a mate they will settle into a den and bear their first litter. The parents are extremely protective of these pups and will raise them for at least two years. At that age, some hounds will set off on their own journey to find a mate. Spooks are built over several generations of hounds, with many hounds staying behind longer to care for their newer siblings. Some even remain with their parents for life or will later fuse their new spook into their old one, creating what is known as a "super spook." The largest super spook on record was made up of 6 spooks.
Spectrhounds are incredibly helpful pets. They are naturally compassionate and intelligent, making them excellent at reading the mood and needs of others. They are also very powerful, fast, and protective, making them excellent livestock guardians.
Spectrhounds can be trained to do a variety of tasks which has lead to them becoming a popular service pet. They are naturally perfect at guide animals for any kel with difficulty navigating. They can easily be taught to close and open doors, grab specific items, and call for help. They also seem to inherit Penumbra's motherly instincts as hounds will fiercely protect kelings.
Spectrhounds do not make good attack or pursuit animals. They seem to have a natural aversion to hurting kels and become easily stressed in violent situations. This seems to be an exclusive fear of violent or angry kels as livestock guardians do not share the same stress reactions.
