crossing Italian lakes
(and drinking their water)
Ci sono quasi sempre quei momenti, mentre pagaio su mari, laghi e fiumi d'Europa, in cui sento il richiamo intimo dell'acqua che mi invita a berla. Inizia con la percezione che sto pagaiando in acqua più pulita. E allora comincio prudentemente a osservare se formo schiuma con il movimento della pagaia. Se non c'è, allora è il segno: rallento, mi fermo, la guardo ... e la bevo, con l'incavo della mano, come devono aver fatto quotidianamente milioni di uomini per migliaia di anni. Con un gesto ormai quasi scomparso. E allora sento che quel mare, quel lago, quel fiume, è mio, sono io.
Inizio oggi ad attraversare (spesso ripetendomi) i laghi italiani, con questo obiettivo: ricercare quella fusione con la loro natura. Rifiuto il fatto che l'uomo abbia inquinato tutto, e con questo gesto di berne l'acqua (consapevole anche del rischio), voglio affermare il mio diritto ad avere acqua pulita, voglio affermare il dovere dell'uomo a mantenerla pulita. Perché non ci può essere alcun motivo che giustifichi l'inquinamento delle acque naturali.

There are almost always those moments, while paddling on the seas, lakes and rivers of Europe, when I feel the intimate call of water inviting me to drink it. It starts with the perception I am paddling in cleaner water. And then I begin cautiously to observe if I form foam with the movement of the paddle. If not, then it is the sign: I slow down, I stop, I look at it ... and I drink it, with the hollow of my hand, as millions of men must have done every day for thousands of years. With a gesture that has now almost disappeared. And then I feel that sea, that lake, that river is mine, it's me.
Today I begin to cross (often repeating it) the Italian lakes, with this goal: to seek that fusion with their nature. I reject the fact that man has polluted everything, and with this gesture of drinking water (also aware of the risk), I want to affirm my right to have clean water, I want to affirm man's duty to keep it clean. Because there cannot be any reason to justify the pollution of natural waters.
