Negative Space Drawings

Yellow Oysters

12x18

The materials I used to make this piece were sharpie, water color and a ruler. I used to sharpie to outline my stool, draw the design, and outline the boarder. I used to watercolor for coloring the backspace yellow. To make this, we used to a technique called Negative space. This is where you draw the shapes in between the object you're drawing. I think I did ok with this technique, but I had trouble in the bottom of the work. My project evolved from looking like a bunch of shapes in pencil to colorful shapes in sharpie.

In my project I used almost every element of art. I used lines, shapes, texture, movement, pattern, rhythm, and balance by creating the flowing lines that look like tree knots. By making the stool white it creates lines, space, contrast and emphasis. The color yellow on top shows color, value, contrast and unity.

The 'idea' of this piece was kinda of chaotic and busy in some parts, but calm and empty in others. There's really no other story than I saw a variation of the pattern in the back in a hotel and liked it. This project relates to my life because it sorta of looks like oysters and I like oysters. I'm most proud of the stool itself because I drew the shapes around it but I ended up actually looking like a stool. One struggle was getting the yellow paint to dry before drawing designs on it but I found a machine that makes it dry faster, and that was very helpful.
