Multi-Media Drawings

"Vail"

12x18

For my multi-media drawing, I chose the 2B pencil, 6B pencil, black charcoal, white charcoal, and a Tortillion. I used the 2B for sketching the figures and creating the grid so they could be erased easily. I used the black charcoal pencil to draw mostly everything including all the blacks and grays. The white charcoal pencil helped me make highlights and I used the tortillion to blend both the pencils together. This time, instead of making a portrait drawing we had to put a lot more detail in it and used charcoal for the first time. I experimented using black and white charcoal and being able to blend faster and more than usual with help from the gray paper. My project evolved from a light gridded sketch to a contoured detailed picture.

I used lines, shapes texture and movement to create the wrinkles in the ski coats. I used value, space, and unity by including all the details of the mountains and the trees behind the subject.

For me, the idea of this piece is drawing all the happiness that is in this picture. The people in the photo and my mom and dad and they are skiing in Vail, Colorado right after they got engaged. I was looking through my mom's old scrapbooks and when I came across this photo I really liked it, I'm not sure why. It might be because the only time I see them now they are always stressed and busy. It's cool to see my parents were once as happy and carefree as they are in that picture. Also, I liked the 90s vibe. I'm proudest of drawing the ski coats, I think I did a pretty good job making them look realistic and the shading proportional. I struggled with making the eyes and mouths look normal although, but I didn't realize they were not to my liking until I took the picture of my art.
