SI #2

Part one: Corset top

For the second sustained investigation, I used an Alexander McQueen dress for my inspiration, without the $3,000 price tag. Corset tops are very big right now, and I was inspired by what I was seeing on the internet. I used the simple placement of the McQueen boning and made the bust fully recycled. My leading question was how can I make old clothes/objects into new, modern fashion, and unfortunately, I did have to buy tule for this project, but I will definitely reuse it.

Most of my project was made with recycled materials. I used an old bra to make the bust, and pieces of an old folder to create the shell. I used fabric from a thrifted dress to case the strips of plastic, and I sewed them all together. I also used that fabric to case the bra. The only part of my project that wasn't recycled was the tule. I used the tule underneath my corset as a base.

for this assignment, I was going to make the whole dress my second SI, but the corset top took me a LOT longer than I expected. Before I started I went to the thrift store and found a boxy, XL black dress that I didn't think anyone was going to be upset that I bought. First I took what I knew about the shape of corsets and cut out the tule as a base. At that moment I knew I needed more tule for the skirt. Next, I made the cases for the folder bits. Then I cut up an old bra and covered it with the black fabric. I sewed/glued all these to the tule base, depending on what I was attaching. then I was pretty much done. re- casing the bra was defiantly the hardest part, the curves were hard the sow.
