Welcome to Rubrics. This section provides an overview of the process to learn how-to create and apply rubrics.
Key Terms
Terms used in this unit: analytic, holistic, single point, and task specific rubrics, assessment, criteria, critical thinking, levels of achievement, rating, single point rubric,task specific rubric, teaching for meaning, and weighted rubric.
Analytic rubric: a rubric that provides a rating score for each criteria.
Holistic rubric: a rubric that has a single, overall assessment score for what is being score,
Single point rubric: similar to an analytic rubric, single point rubrics break down the criteria for proficiency and offer an area for specific feedback.
Task specific rubrics: a rubric unique to a specific task.
Assessment: the systematic process of documenting and using empirical data on the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs to refine programs, courses or student activities and improve student learning.
Criteria: the key elements of a student's work or product.
Critical thinking: the analysis of facts to form a judgement.
Levels of achievement: based on collective judgments about what students should know and be able to do relative to the body of content reflected in each subject-area assessment.
Rating: contain evaluative criteria, quality definitions for those criteria at particular levels of achievement, and a scoring strategy.
Teaching for meaning: preparing students for the world beyond school, fostering deep understandings of content areas, offering curriculum with both depth and breadth, and leading students to develop the disposition to want to achieve.
Weighted rubric: an analytic rubric in which certain concepts are judged more heavily than others.
