Student and Community Engagement in the Classroom

Engagement in our classrooms. Let's discuss.

When we hear the term engagement, what does it mean and what are we seeking in our classrooms? According to Collins Dictionary (2022), some examples of the definition of "engage" as a verb are; to occupy, attract, or involve (someone's interest or attention) or to participate or become involved in. We will discuss "engagement," how we implement it, and where we weave into action, whether in processes or activities. Do we see it has an action we direct outwards, done in collaboration, or where others come forth with interest?

Let's not assume that we all like to engage in the world in the same way, and not always the same way together. This session focuses on engagement as a multi-layered approach, taking into account learning preference, accessibility, mode, location, and time constraints.

Through conversation and activities, participants will identify current engagement practices, revise and formulate an individual action plan to increase student engagement in the classroom.
