SMHS Weekly Newsletter
October 4th
October 4th
Since the beginning of the school year, we have made it a point to remind our students on a daily basis to “make good choices.” We have great kids at our school and the vast majority of our kids do make good choices. They are choosing to be kind, respectful, and inclusive with each other. They are choosing to complete their assignments, conduct themselves appropriately in the classroom, be present, and get to each class on time. We do have a handful of students though who are still working to get to this point. With both the support of the school and the support at home, we can get our students who are struggling in these areas on the right track.
I am very proud of our students and how well they conduct themselves in the community whether on service learning projects, on field trips, or performing throughout the city. I have received many compliments on how kind, respectful, and courteous our students are. Our Lasallian Core Principles are more and more evident in their actions both on and off campus. This is a testament to the efforts of our parents and guardians at home.
We have made it a priority to ensure student safety on our campus. This week our faculty and staff completed critical incident and lock down training. We are making sure our campus is as secure as possible. We will take any threats to the school very seriously whether implied, intended, or made in jest; including on social media. We ask our students and our community to please say something if they hear or see something.
Today marks the midway point of the first semester. Please review your child’s progress report in OnBoard which will be posted no later than October 9.You will see where your child stands academically in each class percentage wise. Missing assignments continue to negatively impact student grades. Please consistently check OnBoard to ensure your child is completing all their work.
On September 29, we celebrated the feast day of our patron, St. Michael the Archangel. We pray to St. Michael to continue to protect and guide our students on their life’s journey and in their faith.
As always, we appreciate your support of St. Michael’s High School. Your efforts help make our school the great school that it is. Go Horsemen!
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal

Parents, we have seen a decrease in our tardies recently! Thank you for helping get your students here on time and let's keep up the good work!
If your student needs to be absent for the day please give Ms. Margie a call to report the absence.
If your student needs to leave at any point during the school day, they must have permission and sign out with Ms. Margie in the front office. Just a reminder that seniors are the only students with permission to go off campus for lunch and they must have an "off campus" pass issued by the front office.
Our seniors have been working hard at creating their resumes, writing college essays, taking ACT/SAT assessments, applying for scholarships, and applying to various colleges around the country!
This last week, we had the wonderful opportunity of having a representative from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation visit us on campus. They met with all seniors to educate and encourage them to apply for their scholarships, such as the Four-Year Undergraduate Scholarships or the Career Pathways Scholarships. To date, the LANL foundation has awarded more than 2,500 scholarships worth over $12 million to deserving students and adult learners from Northern New Mexico.
The First Quarter of our academic calendar came to a close today. We will begin the Second Quarter on Monday, October 7, 2024.

Friday, October 4 - is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Santa Fe. To mark the occasion, Mr. Drake has been hosting a novena of morning prayers dedicated to St. Francis. Each day has been led by different students of all different grades. We were treated to live musical accompaniment by two members of the SMHS Orchestra. Many of us have commented on what a nice way it has been to begin each day. Thank you Mr. Drake!
A part of each day's readings has been the famous "Prayer of St. Francis." With war and division so dominating the headlines these days, it seems we need it more than ever. May we all, like St. Francis, strive to become instruments of God's peace:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
