SMHS Weekly Newsletter

March 14, 2025
Dear Parents,
Congratulations to our boys basketball team advancing to the state semifinals Friday morning. Due to the very large number of anticipated student absences on Friday, we will be utilizing one of our banked snow days and cancel school on Friday, March 14th.
Tomorrow marks the midway point of the second semester. Midterm progress reports will be posted Thursday, March 20th to OnBoard no later than 5:00 p.m. Please contact your child’s teachers directly with any questions or concerns. If your child is struggling academically, I encourage them to take advantage of individual teacher help either before school, at lunch, or after school. Students may also take advantage of peer tutoring as well as work with our college and career counselor on an academic support plan. If your child is experiencing high anxiety or stress, I encourage them to see our mental and behavioral health counselor for support. We have many resources to support your child and will do everything we can to help them be successful.
Student absences, whether excused or unexcused, again are becoming a concern. Missing assignments again are significantly impacting student grades. It is imperative that students complete all their assignments even if they are absent. Students must meet deadlines and plan ahead if they have athletics or other activities. Students should be referring to their teachers’ Google Classrooms to find out what they missed. Please refer to OnBoard to check your child’s attendance.
The 2025-2026 Course Catalog is published and available on our website under the Academics tab then Curriculum tab. The course catalog was also provided to all students via Google Classroom. The 2025-2026 course selection for returning students will take place on Monday. We encourage you to review the course catalog with your child to help them be prepared to select the appropriate core courses and desired electives. We will be providing course selection support on that day as well.
All students will fill out a course selection sheet. Course selections will be entered once students are fully registered and up to date on their tuition balances. If your child has an outstanding balance, we ask that this be addressed as soon as possible. Also, please note that students who still have delinquent balances will not be able to take their final exams in May until the balances are up to date. The business office will be contacting parents to let them know if their child falls in this category.
Congratulations to our orchestra who performed beautifully at the Music Performance Assessment last Friday. They received the highest score of all 12 orchestras that performed, and received a superior rating! Congratulations to our choir who performed exceptionally well at their Music Performance Assessment on Wednesday and received a rating of Excellent! Go Horsemen!
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal

Let us remember . . .
At the opening of this Jubilee Year dedicated to the virtue of Hope, Pope Francis observed that hope, “is a summons not to tarry, to be kept back by our old habits, or to wallow in mediocrity or laziness. Hope calls us – as Saint Augustine would say – to be upset with things that are wrong and to find courage to change them.”
Let’s not stand still this Lent. Let’s contemplate the challenge of the Gospel, especially the always challenging parable of the Good Samaritan and take advantage of the disciplines of Lent – fasting, almsgiving and prayer – to soften our hearts and open our arms for our sisters and brothers in need.
