SMHS Weekly Newsletter

November 22nd
Dear Parents,
We are beginning to have some academic and behavioral concerns predominately with our seventh grade students. This tends to happen around the holidays. I met with the seventh grade class this week to reiterate behavior expectations and ramifications for poor behavior. I also reiterated the academic expectations of our school. We have too many seventh graders with D’s and F’s right now largely due to missing assignments and poor test scores. I encourage parents to have this conversation at home as well.
On Thursday, we had an all school Thanksgiving Prayer Service and reflected on what we are thankful for. We reflected on the importance of family and how to not take the many blessings we have for granted. We also reflected on how we can help those less fortunate than us and be of service to those in need.
It is such a blessing to work with our amazing students and truly wonderful faculty and staff on a daily basis. The love, care, and support of the entire St. Michael’s community is incredible. Thank you for entrusting us with the education and care of your children. Our school is such a special place because of them.
We would like to wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving and a safe, restful, and enjoyable Thanksgiving break!
Congratulations to our volleyball team for winning the state championship for the third year in a row! Also congratulations to our football team competing in the semifinals this evening against NMMI in Roswell, as they continue their quest for their second state championship in a row! Go Horsemen!
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal
Thank you to all students and SM staff for their generosity and donations to our food drive and turkey trot. 20 Thanksgiving baskets were delivered on Thursday to the Familia Clinic where families in need will pick them up to have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

Please complete survey
Springtide Research Institute is conducting a survey as a third party, with the Lasallian District of San Francisco New Orleans, to understand more about your student(s)’ experiences at their school––specifically focused on their belonging and thriving. This survey will follow up on our findings from the past two years.
This survey will ask about your perceptions of student belonging and thriving at the school, and your responses will provide a more holistic view of the student experience.
Findings from this survey will accompany our findings from a similar student survey. As a vital participant in this study, we need to hear from you! This survey should take you about 6 minutes to complete. All responses are confidential.

In Memoriam . . .
The St. Michael's family lost one of its own last week, as David Blackman returned home to his reward. Dave was an active member of our St. Mike's community for decades. His two sons - Joel ('97) and Jeff ('00) - both graduated from St. Mike's. He was on the school's Board of Trustees from 2014-18, served on the St. Michael's Foundation, and was a member of the Miguel Chavez Society. Dave's passion, however, was the San Miguel Chapel, where he served as the director for over 20 years. Dave was Lasallian through-and-through.
Last week, Dave concluded a long battle with cancer. He battled it with such grace, wisdom and humility. He would readily admit that his time was limited and that it was all in God's hands. To Dave's credit, that perspective seemed only to strengthen his resolve to appreciate every day and to continue to do God's work as long as he could. He is survived by his wife Portia, and their sons Joel and Jeff. He will be sorely missed. God bless you, Dave.
