Dear Parents,
It was such a joy to celebrate our seniors with our ring mass and ceremony on Monday as they begin their journey through their last year of high school. They are the student leaders of our school, our five Lasallian Core Principles are evident in their actions, and they set a good example for our underclassmen of what it means to be a St. Michael’s student. They are a truly wonderful senior class. A special thank you to Archbishop Wester for celebrating our mass making this event extra special. On Monday we also celebrated the feast day of our patron, St. Michael the Archangel. We pray to St. Michael to continue to protect and guide our students on their life’s journey and in their faith.
This week we came together to honor and support cancer survivors. It was wonderful to see our students actively participating in “Pink Week.” I would like to thank Ms. Deborah Garcia for organizing the week, and Ms. Elise Lopez , Ms. Margie Baca, and Ms. Alexa Chavez for the support they provided in making this a fun week for everyone.
On October 8th we will provide active shooter training for all students to be conducted by the Santa Fe Police Department SWAT Unit. This training will educate students on what to do in given situations, how police will respond, and how best to protect themselves.
October 10th marks the end of the first nine weeks of school. The new eligibility policy applies to this grading period beginning October 16th when grades are posted. Students must have a minimum of a 2.0 and no F’s to maintain their eligibility and continue to travel with their teams and play in games. If students lose eligibility they may regain it by bringing an F up to a C and having a minimum 2.0 when grade checks are done each Monday. The policy which was shared with all families, students, coaches and teachers at the beginning of the school year is outlined below.
Since the beginning of the school year, we have made it a point to remind our students on a daily basis to “make good choices.” We have great kids at our school and the vast majority of our kids do make good choices. They are choosing to be kind, respectful, and inclusive with each other. They are choosing to complete their assignments, conduct themselves appropriately in the classroom, be present, and get to each class on time. We do have a handful of students though who are still working to get to this point. With both the support of the school and the support at home, we can get our students who are struggling in these areas on the right track.
As always, we appreciate your support of St. Michael’s High School. Your efforts help make our school the great school that it is. Go Horsemen!
Yours in Christ,
Martin C. Sandoval, Principal
At St. Michael’s high school student-athletes are students first and will be held to a higher academic standard. The eligibility rules of St. Michael’s exceed what is required by the NMAA. Student-athletes can regain eligibility at the 9-week grading period; and the end of the semester. St. Michael’s will not utilize the cumulative provision as outlined by the NMAA.
Academic ineligibility is determined with each report card. A student-athlete is academically ineligible when they have below a 2.0 GPA or at least one “F” grade at the end of a grading period. Ineligibility extends to the next 9-week grading period.
Mid-Term (9 Week) Grade Reporting
St. Michael’s High School has adopted a continuous grading system. Students will receive a mid-term (9 Week) grade report to indicate where the student is performing at the mid-term of each semester. These grade reports are available on OnBoard showing non-permanent grades indicating each student’s progress. These grades could potentially affect the student’s eligibility status:
o Students who begin the semester INELIGIBLE may regain eligibility if they have no Fs and have a GPA above a 2.0 (students who do not regain eligibility at the mid-term will remain ineligible for the remainder of the semester.
o Students who begin the semester ELIGIBLE may LOSE eligibility temporarily if they are below a 2.0 GPA and/or have an F in a class.
o Grades will only be checked on Mondays for the remainder of the semester to determine re-eligibility. Students will be granted re-eligibility if they show a GPA over a 2.0 and/or have brought the F to a C.
The school will email parents directly with the date ineligibility begins.
A student who is academically ineligible may not practice, play, or travel for any athletic or activity events of which the student may have been a member.
Raffle Tickets were distributed Friday, September 26. Each family received an envelope labeled with their name containing a booklet of 8 numbered tickets.
An instruction sheet was included with the tickets explaining how to return ticket stubs and collected money. Please review it carefully to ensure all tickets are returned by the deadline.
Top 3 sellers will receive a percentage of their family’s ticket sales:
#1: 50%
#2: 35%
#3: 20%
Example: If the #1 seller (family) sells 20 tickets ($1,000), that family receives $500!
Thank you for supporting St. Michael’s and our students!

Let us remember...
Tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 4, is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi - the patron saint of Santa Fe. St. Francis was famously told by a voice from God to "Go and rebuild my church." In hindsight it’s almost comical that Francis initially took this literally by physically repairing dilapidated chapels. He later came to understand, however, that the mission was a spiritual one. His true calling was to reform and renew the Church through his own poverty, charity, prayer, preaching, and the founding of the Franciscan Order.
It’s a lesson for all of us. Maybe we don’t know exactly what God is calling each of us to do. Maybe, like St. Francis, we have a few false starts. That’s o.k. If we keep listening, we’ll figure it out. The point, though, is to start. We shouldn’t wait to be sure of the ending before we begin. Do what you think God is calling you to do. From there, if it’s not right, He’ll show you the way.
Live Jesus in our hearts...
SMHS alumni success
On August 14 at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, Army Captain Emilio Pacheco (class of 2013), outgoing commander of Headquarters Company turned over his command to Army Captain Joaquin Segura (class of 2014), incoming commander.
This is the first time students from the same high school participate in the outgoing and incoming change of command in the Army. Congratulations to our SMHS alumni. Please see bio below.
