Talk by faculty member on "Scientific Writing for Journals" in the Academic Staff College of KVASU

Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications gave a talk on "Scientific Writing for Journals" on 12 February 2016 as part of an Orientation Programme for college/university teachers conducted by the Academic Staff College of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.

MCA students participate in Advika 2016

Advika 2016, the College-level Arts Festival, was conducted on 3-4 , 8-9 February 2016, Off-stage events were conducted on the first two days and the on-stage events on the last two days. Only a small contingent of MCA students participated in the programmes and so there was only token presence of MCA students in the list of prize winners.

Faculty presented a paper in 28th Kerala Science Congress

Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, presented a paper titled "Harnessing Google Sites for Enhancing Native and Vernacular Content in the Web" in the 28th Kerala Science Congress held at Calicut University Campus during 28-30 January 2016. The paper was jointly authored by Ms Reji C. Joy, Ms Salkala K, S. and Ms Siji K. B., faculty members of the Department of Computer Applications.

Eight students of S5 MCA batch have been placed in Wipro Technologies. These students were selected during a Campus Recruitment Drive by Wipro held at Don Bosco College, Mattannur, Kannur District on 22 January 2016. Altogether, 15 students of Vidya participated in the drive. The Department congratulated the students on their meritorious achievement.

Motivational Talk and Distribution of Scholarship by First Masters of Vidya in a programme organised by ViCA

Representatives of The First Masters of Vidya (students of the first MCA batch of Vidya Academy of Science & Technology) came to the Department of Computer Applications for a second time to participate in the distribution of a scholarship instituted by them. The scholarship distribution function was organised by ViCA (Vidya Computer Applications Association) in the Main Seminar Hall of the College at 10.30 am on 21 January 2016. Ms. Veena Raju, Chief Software Architect, UST Global, was also present on the occasion and she delivered an inspiring and motivational talk on the life and work in the IT industry.

The recipient of the scholarship was Ms Aswini P. V., S3 MCA.

The programme was presided over by Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications. Ms. Siji K. B., Assistant Professor, welcomed the representatives of the First masters and others. Ms. Salkala K. S. introduced the recipient of the scholarship. Principal Dr. Sudha Balagopalan participated in the programme as a guest of honour and felicitated the scholarship winner and also the First Masters. The First Masters also spoke to the students.

The first such scholarship instituted by by members of the First Masters of Vidya was distributed in a function held on 05 February 2015.

Faculty members participate in a 3-day FDP on Ethical Hacking

(16 January 2016)

Four faculty members of the Department of Computer Applications, namely, Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Ms. Aparna S. Balan, Ms. Siji K. B. and Ms. Salkala K. S., participated in a 3-day Faculty Development Programme on "Ethical Hacking" organised by the Department of CSE of the College jointly with CSI and ISTE during 14 - 16 January 2016. The Programme was organised as a fully hands-on workshop. Mr. Shanil K. N., Assistant Professor in the Department of CSE, was the resource person for the Programme. There were about 30 participants in the Programme.

e-SpiderZ 2016 announced

The contest for finding the best website created using Google Sites, christened e-SpiderZ 2016, has been announced. The contest is open to all students of the Department of Computer Applications of the College. The entries are to submitted on or befor 29 February 2016.

Half-day Workshop on Google Sites for S1 MCA students

(13 January 2016)

Under the auspices of ViCA, a Half-Day Workshop on Google Sites was organised on 13 January 2016 for the benefit of S1 MCA students. After a brief introduction by Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, Ms Siji K B and Ms Salkala K S, Assistant Professors in the Department of Computer Applications, ably directed the activities of the Workshop. All the participating students created a website using the facilities offered by Google Sites. The Head of Department also announced a contest for the best

website created using Google Sites. The contest is open to all students of the Department.

Research paper by Ms Reji C Joy accepted for presentation in International Conference at IIT Roorkee

A paper titled "Fingerprint Image Segmentation using Textural Features" and authored by Ms. Reji C Joy, Associate Professor of Computer Applications, (jointly with her research guide) has been accepted for presentation in the International Conference on Computer Vision & Image Processing to be held at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Uttarkhand, during February 26 - 28, 2016.

Domain Talk by Mr Manesh D

(27 November 2015)

Mr Manesh D, Assistant Professor of Computer Applications, gave a talk on Software Architecture on 08 January 2016 as part of the Domain-Talk Series of the College. The talk was held in the Advanced Computer Lab of the College. The faculty and staff of Computer Applications and CSE Departments participated in the the programme.

Classes for S3 and S5 MCA batches of 2015-16 commence

(07 January 2016)

After the completion of the University Examinations of S2 and S4 MCA, the Department of Computer Applications started regular lecture classes for S3 and S5 of the MCA course. Classes for S5 MCA was started on 28 december 2015 and for S3 MCA on 06 January 2016.

Two papers authored by faculty members of the department of Computer Applications have been accepted for presentation in 2016 International Conference on Data Mining and Advanced Computing (SAPIENCE) to be held during 16-18 March 2016 at Sree Narayana Gurukulam College of Engineering, Kadayiruppu, Ernakulam Dt. The papers will also be published in the IEEE Xplore and Conference Proceedings. The details of the papers are as follows:

Scholarship and Endowment Prize Distribution Function 2014-15

(04 January 2016)

The Scholarship and Endowment Prize Distribution Function 2014-15 of the College was held in the College Auditorium on 04 January 2016. An array of dignitaries participated in the programme. As many as 98 scholarships for students were announced during the programme among whom 5 were students of the MCA course. As many as 33 Endowment Prizes for University Examination toppers were distributed. Three of the Endowment Prize winners were MCA students, One of the MCA students received two Endowment Prizes.

The Department of Computer Applications also helped in the organisation of the programme. The responsibility vested with the Department was the preparation of the various certificates to be distributed to the students. Ms Reji C Joy, Associate Professor in the Department was the Convener of the Sub-Committee formed for the preparation of the Certificates. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was in charge of the overall coordination of the Programme.

Shajna Musthafa was also awarded the E Mamatha Memorial Endowment Prize for the Best Outgoing MCA student

Mamatha E, student of MCA (2009-12 batch) who met with a tragic accident and lost her life while rushing to the College to appear for a series test in time. An Endowment has been created by her parents, classmates, and the staff and faculty of the department of Computer Applications to perpetuate her memory. The Endowment is to honour every year the best outgoing MCA student of the College with a cash prize of Rs.5000.

Faculty to present research paper in 28th Kerala Science Congress

A paper titled “Harnessing Google Sites To Enhance Native And Vernacular Content In The Web: An Experiential Report” authored by Dr V N Krishnachandran (Head of Department of Computer Applications), jointly with Ms. Reji C Joy (Associate Professor), Ms. Siji K B (Assistant Professor) and Ms Salkala K S (Assistant Professor) has been accepted for presentation in the 28th Kerala Science Congress to be held at Calicut University Campus during 28 – 30 January 2016.
