S5 MCA students and staff visit Snehalayam, Mundathikode on charity work (09 April 2013)

The students of S5 MCA (2013 admissions) batch and staff of the department of Computer Applications visited Snehalayam, at Mundathikode, Thrissur, on 09 April 2013 as part of a charity work organised by the students.

Snehalayam, is a not-for-profit organisation for providing a helping hand to the less fortunate persons among us, that is, beggars, mentally and physically challenged persons, persons suffering from leprosy, unwanted babies, old destitute people, critically ill men and women, and the like. Presently, Snehalayam gives a home to more than 400 persons, men, women and children, of all ages, and of all religions. They are provided with shelter, medicine, food and all the necessary amenities.

The charity work was an initiative of the S5 MCA students and all staff of the Department cooperated with the work. Ms Aparna S Balan and Mr Manesh D, Group Tutors of the students, gave necessary guidance and helped coordinate the various activities.

The students collected money from among themselves and the staff members also made contributions.

The activities connected with the charity work had the following four components of which the last component was the most important.

  • Donation of provision and other materials which are required on a daily basis in the running of the institution.
  • Distribution of sweets among the inmates
  • Donation of a sum of money to the Management of the institution as a gesture of support to the philanthropic activities of the Management
  • Visiting the inmates of the institution

The students and staff left the college in a College bus at around 11.00 am and reached the premises of Snehalayam at around 11.30 am. The girls and lady staff members visited the women inmates, the boys and male male staff members visited the men inmates. Each inmate was presented with a packet containing some sweets and biscuits. Some of the inmates spoke of their unfortunate circumstances, some sat smiling and some didn't care. It appeared that all were happy to receive the visitors and the packets. At least the visitors could provide a few moments of joy in the lives of those unfortunate persons.

After the visit, Mr Antony, the man behind this philanthropic initiative, spoke of his vision, spoke of how he chose this way of life, and appealed all to give a helping hand to those who are in need. Then, the materials brought by the students were handed over to Mr Antony and and the money was also entrusted to him.

The staff and students returned to the College at around 1.00 pm, many with a heavy hart.

26th Internal FDP : "On Switchover to Free Software" (04 December 2012)

Because of certain licensing issues with MicroSoft, the College authorities have decided to stop using proprietary software to the maximum extend possible. This has repercussions in the Department of Computer Applications also. To help the process of migration and to develop strategies for the effective implementation of the migration, the Department has devised an Internal Faculty Development Programme. This FDP is different from all the previous FDP's in as much as it is not confined to one day; it is spread over several days. Each faculty member learns the process of migration by actually doing it. The current plan is to complete the programme during the period 04 - 12 December 2012. In a 30-minute inaugural ceremony held in the Computer Lab, Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department, suggested the following two main components for immediate implementation.

Placement drive by TCS (11 November 2012)

Kavitha C Nair

The much awaited TCS placement drive was held on 11 November 2012. In the drive, Kavitha C Nair (S4 MCA), along with eleven other students of B Tech classes, were selected for recruitment. Congratulations to all those who were selected by TCS!

On the whole the event turned out to be great disappointment for all. The students and all those involved in the placement activities were confident that a much larger number of students would be recruited by TCS. Students had been given intensive coaching for facing the various challenges associated with the drive. The global recession is cited as the main reason for low intake by TCS. It is rumored that TCS has decided to reduce this year's intake to about one-third of the total intake of the corresponding period last year.

But it is sure this is not the end of the road to the students of Vidya.

Eid-Al-Adha Mubarak! (26 October 2012)

Eid al-Adha also called Feast of the Sacrifice, the Major Festival, the Greater Eid and Id-ul-Zuha, is an important festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honor the willingness of the prophet ʾIbrāhīm (Abraham) to sacrifice his young firstborn son Ismā'īl (Ishmael) as an act of submission to God, and his son's acceptance of the sacrifice before God intervened to provide Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead. This year's Eid al-Adha festival falls on 26th October 2012.

In Urdu- and Hindi-speaking areas, the festival is also called Bakr Īd stemming from the Urdu-Hindi word bakrī, "goat", because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat in South Asia. This term is also borrowed into other languages, such as Malayalam Bakr Eid Peru Nāl.
