Students and staff celebrate Christmas

(18 - 19 December 2015)

The students of Vidya celebrated Christmas on 18 December 2015 by organising crib making competitions, smart Papa competitions and distributing cakes. For students of the Department of Computer Applications, it was really a fun-filled and merry occasion with loud-noised drum-like instruments being played in and around the Department. All students, faculty and staff participated in the merry-making. There were a few fun games as well. The programme was held in the Seminar Hall of the Department.

The staff celebrated Christmas with speeches, songs and dances on 19 December 2015 in the College Auditorium. The Staff Club of the College coordinated the activities of the day. The talk was held in the Advanced Computer Lab of the College. The faculty and staff of Computer Applications and CSE Departments participated in the the programme.

S6 MCA students sat in a class for the last time and heard teachers saying adieu to them

(24 November 2015)

The students of S6 MCA batch (2012 admissions) sat in a classroom for the last time of their life and heard their teachers bidding adieu to them. This happened on 24 November 2015, the day on which the Project Viva Voce of the MCA course was held as per Calicut University orders. Four external examiners from neighbouring institutions had come to the College to conduct the Viva and there were assisted by the faculty members of the department. Thankfully, the Viva ended happily for all, students, faculty and staff of the department, and the external examiners. The Department had arranged a lunch in honour of the external examiners.

Exits feedbacks were also collected.

The adieu programme was held at about 3.30 pm on the same day in the Seminar Hall of the Department. Faculty members formally welcomed the students and there was a brief speech by the Head of Department who remined the students of the importance of the moment: The students would, mostly, never again in their life be sitting as students in a classroom wearing a College uniform; perhaps the last hour in their life as students. He, along with all faculty and staff of the Department, bid adieu to the students for the last time. All the students were distributed Course completion Certificates during the programme. Sweets were also distributed.

Domain talk series being organised jointly by CA and CSE Departments inaugurated

The domain talk series being organized jointly by the Departments of Computer Applications and Computer Science & Engineering was inaugurated on 21 November 2015 (Saturday) with a two-hour talk on "Why I Love Fractals" by Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications. Attendance was thin due to overlap of several programmes organized simultaneously by other bodies in the College and higher level patronage to some other programmes. The programme was held in the Computer Lab of the Department of Computer Applications. It was followed by one-hour talks by Mr. E. T. sivadasan, System Adminstrator, on "Virtual LAN" and by Ms Divya K. V., Asst. Professor of CSE, on "Problem Solving Strategies".

For the fourth consecutive year, Vidya MCA students bag ranks in University Examinations

MCA students of Vidya Academy of Science & Technology bagged the first and second ranks in the University Examinations held in December 2014. The first rank was secured by Ms Shajna Musthafa with a CGPA of 9.24 and the second rank by Ms Tainu Ousey with a CGPA of 9.03. The information was obtained from the University in response to a request made by Dr. V. N. krishnachandran under Right to Information Act.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which a Vidya MCA student is securing the First Rank in University Examinations.

Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, HoD, served as resource person for a two-day workshop on Latex at Royal College of Engineering

Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, helped Royal College of Engineering and Technology, Akkikavu, Thrissur, in organising a two-day workshop on LaTeX by serving as the resource person for the workshop. The workshop was held during 18-19 November 2015. It was a fully hands-on workshop providing a first introduction to the LaTeX typesetting programme. The students of MTech programmes and a few faculty members participated in the workshop. At the end of the workshop, the students were provided with a template prepared in LaTeX for writing their project and seminar reports.

A memorable, fun filled and sentimental farewell to outgoing MCA students

(13 November 2015)

ViCA (Vidya Computer Applications Association) organised a programme on 13 November 2015 in the College Auditorium to bid farewell to the outgoing MCA students. It was indeed a memorable, fun filled and sentimental farewell programme.

The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. Sudha Balagopalan, Principal, at about 10.30 am and was presided over Dr. V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Deapartment. The activities of the forenoon session were more or less formal with speeches by faculty members and talks by selected outgoing and current students. There was also a solo welcome dance by Naveeja of S4 MCA. The afternoon session, after a sumptuous lunch arranged as part of the programme, was more informal and fun filled. The organisers distributed fun-awards to outgoing students in several categories like Mr. Perfect, Mr. Soap, Mr. Azhimathi and Mr. Ghost Rider. They also distributed small mementos to all outgoing students. There were dance performances by S2 MCA students. Some videos evoking nostalgia were also presented. The last item on the agenda was a deeply sentimental video depicting a faceless outgoing student finally bidding adieu to all faculty and staff of the Department and leaving the premises of the Department. Some of the students literally broke down in tears watching the video!

Ms Jisha Jose Panakkal, Associate Professor, crosses another obstacle in securing a patent for her invention

Ms. Jisha Jose Panakkal, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Applications, has crossed another milestone in securing a patent for her invention. She has submitted a file containing the complete specification of her invention titled "An adaptive utility-based anonymization" to Dy. Controller of Patents & Designs, Patents Office, Chennai, on 9 November 2015 for review. She had submitted a provisional application for the patent on 14 November 2014. The intellectual property for which the patent application has been filed was created as part of Ms Jisha's PhD studies. Ms Jisha is pursuing PhD at Hindusthan University under the guidance of Dr Anitha S Pillai.

Department of Computer Applications to come under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University

(31 October 2015)

Kerala Government has issued orders for affiliating the MCA programmes in engineering colleges in Kerala to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (APJAKTU). APJAKTU will give affiliation to only those programmes which are now being conducted in engineering colleges affiliated to it. At present there are only 27 engineering colleges in Kerala which offer the MCA programme.

Orientation Programme for MCA Freshers 2015

The Orientation Programme for the newly admitted MCA students and their parents was held in the College Auditorium on 27 October 2015. The programme was held in two sessions.

In the first session, which began at 9.30 am, dignitaries associated with the College participated as specially invited guests. Principal Dr Sudha Balagopalan presided over the function and delivered the presidential address. Er. G. Mohanachandran, Executive Director, VICT, felicitated the participants and also gave an informative presentation on VICT. Two students of the outgoing batch shared their experiences. Dr V. N. Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applictaions, welcomed all and Ms Jisha Jose Panakkal, Associate Professor, proposed a vote of thanks. The newly admitted students form the 10th batch MCA batch of Vidya Academy of science & Technology. The 10th batch was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp.

The second session, which began at 11.00 am, was devoted introducing the College and the Department to the freshers and their parents. This was preceded by a talk on the placement scenario by Mr Paul Chakkola, Director of Training & Placement Cell. The Head of Department also gave an overview of the rules and regulations of the College. After a brief interaction with the other faculty of the department, all participants were taken to the Department premises. A college bus had been arranged to take the participants to Kaiparambu after the Programme.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Jayanthi observed in Department

(15 October 2015)

The 84th birth anniversary of much loved and respected former rocket scientist and President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (born on 15 October 1931 and died on 27 July 2015), was observed as "APJ Abdul Kalam Jayanthi" in the Department of Computer Applications on 15 October 2015 with slide shows and distribution of sweets. The students of S2 MCA took the initiative to organise the programme. Alphajohn T J prepared the slide show and Avinash V presented it. All faculty members of the Department participated in the programme.

Workshop on Malayalam Computing

(9 October 2015)

Under the auspices of ViCA (Vidya Computer Applications Association), the Department organised a half-day workshop on Malayalam Computing on 09 October 2015 AN. The Workshop was held in the Computer Lab of the department. The programme was also structured as a Faculty Development Programme. All students of S4 MCA class and all the faculty members of the Department of Computer Applications participated in the Workshop. The programme began with a replay of a recorded recitation of Daivadasakam and a formal welcome speech by Ms Siji K B, Assistant Professor in the Department. Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, was the resource person for the Workshop.

During the first half of the Workshop, the participants were trained to install the Varamozhi package and to use the Keyman software for inputting Malayalam script in documents. The method used was a popular phonetic transliteration scheme for Malayalam in the Roman script known as the Mozhi transliteration scheme. In the second half, the participants were trained to include Malayalam script as content in gmail messages. All the participants joyously participated in the workshop, and each one of them sent a gmail to the resource person containing a sketch written in Malayalm about his/her best friend.

Staff celebrate Onam

(22 August 2015)

The whole day was filled with glitter, glamour and fun. Young and not so young professors, managers and all sang, danced, and played music chair and devoured a thirteen-course dinner to their bellyful. The staff and family members of Vidya were celebrating the arrival of Onam in the campus. Of course there was the usual ritual of message giving. There was also the ritual of not listening to the messages! All were busy imagining the fun of the ensuing cultural programmes, and it was exactly the expected behaviour from the audience! But it was great fun indeed.

The celebrations, held on 22 August 2015, started at 11.00 am in the morning and went on up to 4.30 in the evening. A mixed Thiruvathirakali presented by the staff of CSE Department was one of the highlights of the cultural programmes.

The events were organised by the Staff Club of the College and its secretary Mr Prameesh played a very important leadership role in the success of the Programme. Ms Jyothi P R, Lab Assistant of the Department, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Staff Club, was fully involved in organising the events and also the competitions held as part of the Onam celebrations.

The current academic year's activities of Vidya Computer Applications Association (ViCA) was inaugurated in a formal function held in the College Auditorium on 17 August 2015. There was a formal meeting presided over Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Depaartment, and it was followed by cultural events. Principal Dr Sudha Balagopalan participated as a Guest of Honour and felicitated the gathering. The cultural events consisted of meticulously choreographed group dances by students of both S2 and S4 MCA classes. Sweets were also distributed on the occasion.

Faculty participation in International Conference

Ms Jisha Jose Panackal, Associate Professor, presented her tenth research paper titled “An Intelligent Model for Privacy Preserving Data Mining: Study on Health Care Data” at International Symposium on Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications (ISTA’15) in ICACCI’15 organized by SCMS, Cochin during 10-13 August 2015. The paper will be published by Springer as a book chapter in Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing Series.

In addition to that, she was designated as one of the Reviewers of the conference and was also invited as a Session Chair for chairing the session “Intelligent Techniques and Applications” which was during 9.00am – 1.00pm on 13-Aug-2015. There were thirteen participants from different parts of the world.

Second Workshop on LaTeX for students of neighboring arts and science colleges

(07 August 2015)

As part of the extension activities of the Department, the Department of Computer Applications organized a second Workshop on LaTeX on 07 August 2015 for the benefit of the students and staff of the neighbouring arts and science colleges. The first such Workshop was organised exclusively for the post-graduate students and staff of Ansar Women’s College, Perumpilavu on 11-07-2015. Both Workshops were organised jointly with Computer Society of India (VAST Student Chapter). For effective utilization of the available time, no formal ceremonies were held as part of the conduct of the programme. The workshop, held as fully hand on sessions in the Computer Lab of the Department, started with a silent prayer at 9.45.00 am and continued up to 4.30 pm with a short lunch break. Ms Aparna S Balan, Assistant Professor, welcomed the participants.

Staff and students of various arts and science participated in the Workshop as detailed below. All the student participants were students of the S2 MSc (Computer Science) class.

On HoD's visit to Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, along with Dr S S Swapnakumar, Prof and Head of Department of ECE, visited Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on 29 July 2015. The visit was as per a directive from the management and was intended to explore the possibility of developing nan-technology in Vidya cademy of Science & Technology.

The activities during the visit was well structured and happened in four stages. The first stage was a visit to i2n Technologies followed by a discussion with the Vice-President of to i2n Technologies, a startup company functioning in the IISc campus. This was followed by a visit to the Laboratories of the Centre for Nano-science & Engineering (CeNSE). The third stage was a personal interaction with Dr Rudra Pratap, the Chairman of CeNSE. In the last stage, they revisited the i2n Technologies and witnessed the working of a student version of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope.

Student Entrepreneur inaugurates own office premises in town

Tonny P Sunny of S6 MCA, an entrepreneur with great promise, has set up an office of his company StringSoft Technologies in Kunnamkulam town. The office is being inaugurated on 15 July 2015. The company, co-owned by an elder brother of Tonny, has at present four employees and is into the business of developing and hosting commercial websites.

Eid Fest in the Department

(15 July 2015)

For the first time in the history of the Department of Computer Applications, and perhaps for the first time in the history of the College, a programme christened Eid Fest was held in the Department in the after-noon of 15 July 2015 to celebrate Eid al-Fttr,a festival associated with Islamic traditions. It was a simple, yet elegant, programme organized by Vidya Computer Applications Association (ViCA) in which all students, staff and faculty of the Department participated. Salih C P of S4 MCA explained at length the significance and the symbolism of Eid al-Fitr and in particular the real import of the dawn to dusk fasting observed by the believers in the month of Ramadan prior to the Eid al-Fitr festival. Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department, who presided over the function, and all faculty members addressed the students. They congratulated the students for taking the initiative in organizing such a programme and in particular for creating an ambiance for better understanding of different cultures and traditions. Nimisha of S2 MCA sang a mappila song.

As part of the programme, sweets were distributed to all. (Those who were on fast waited for the dusk to fall to savour the sweets!). There was also a mehendi competition in which as many as nine students participated keenly.

One-Day Workshop on LaTeX for students of Ansar Women's College, Perumpilavu

A belated observance of World Environment Day 2015

(07 July 2015)

The Department of Computer Applications observed the World Environment Day by organising a slideshow creation contest for the S2 MCA students based on the theme of the World Environment Day 2015. The Department could hold the observance only on 06 July 2015 as all the students of the Department were out of campus due to University Examinations on the actual day, namely 05 June, on which the the observance should have been held. The slideshows will be evaluated and prizes will be awarded to the best entries at an appropriate occasion. The whole exercise is to force the students to spend some time contemplating the importance of environmental issues and pondering about the impending environmental disaster.

Regular classes resume after University Examinations

(06 July 2015)

Regular classes for all the MCA batches have been resumed after University Examinations. Classes for S6 MCA were resumed at the beginning of June itself. Classes for S4 MCA were resumed on 24 June 2015 and for S2 MCA on 06 July 2015. University Examinations and Laboratory Examninations were conducted as per schedule.

The FDP's were centered on the the following themes:

I Agile Software Development: 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

A software development methodology refers to the framework that is used to structure, plan, and control the process of developing an information system. Agile Development is an incremental, iterative approach to software development that is designed to reduce risk. The session covered Agile Software Development with focus on SCRUM Methodology.

II DevOps: 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM

DevOps is an emerging software engineering practice that significantly reduces the amount of time it takes a product team to take software code to deployment and release. This practice embraces the unified agile process and spans through planning and requirements management to development, test and quality assurance (QA) on to release and deployment. The growth of cloud computing, mobile applications, Bigdata, social media etc (Digital Solutions and Services) introduces the need for a changed thinking in software development methodology and thus playing an important role in the adoption of DevOps in the IT.
