Brahmasmrithi and Endowment Prizes/Scholarships distribution function (28 September 2013)

Brahmasmrithi, a commemoration programme in honour of late Er K R Brahmadathan, Founder Executive Director of Vidya International Charitable Trust, was held in the College Auditorium on 28 September 2013. The third death anniversary of late Er K R Brahmadathan fell on 17 September 2013. There were mainly three speakers on the occasion: Swami Brahmaswarupananda, Guru Narayana Asramam, Amaripadam, Dr V P Gangadharan, Oncologist, Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi, and Sri V P Nadakumar, CEO, Manappuram Finance Ltd. Prof T Suseelan, Professor of Statitics (retired), Sri Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, eleborated on the activities of Brahmavidya Outreach Programme.

Late Er Brahmadathan was a great lover of sports and to perpetuate his memory it had been decided to institute a national level football competition. Sri Nandakumar had agreed to sponsor the Trophy for the competition. On the occasion of this year's Brahmasmrithi, Sri Nandakumar unveiled the Manappuram-Vidya Ever-rolling Trophy.

Along with the commemoration programme, the Endowment Prizes/Scholarship distribution function was also held. A few scholarships instituted by Vidya International Charitable Trust were distributed. Also a few Endowment Prizes instituted by well wishers of Vidya Academy of Science & Technology were also distributed.

The occasion was a little emotional for all in the Department of Computer Applications. The Endowment Prize in memory of late E Mamatha, a student of 2009 - 2012 MCA batch, was being presented for the first time during an Endowment prize distribution ceremony. This Endowment had been instituted by Mrs & Mr. E.A. Ramachandran (parents of Mamatha), Students of MCA (2009-12 batch) and Staff of the MCA Departmen. The recipient of the Prize was Ms Ann Mary John who had secured the first rank in Calicut University in MCA. Ms Ann was also a classmate of late E Mamatha. Mr E A Ramachandran, father of Mamatha was present during the Prize Distribution ceremony and he personally handed over the Prize money and certificate to the prize winner.

The programme came to an end with yoga demonstrations by two teams: One team consisted of women residing near Vidya College; the other team consisted of men and women students of Vidya College.

After the programme, food was served to all.

Vidya Staff celebrate Onam (12 September 2013)

Thursday, 12th September, was a day of great festivities for Vidya Staff: it was on that day Vidya Staff Club had organisd programmes as part of Onam celebrations of this year.Since the day was a regular working day for staff and a holiday for students, the entire contingent of the staff of the College participated in all the cultural programmes. The highlight of the programme was a Mohiniyattam performance by Kalamandallm Manju, a professional Mohiniyattom artiste, and daughter of a Staff of the College.

Mr Dijesh D and Mr Sajay K R, Associate Professors in the Department of Computer Applications, have published a research paper. The paper is titled "Utility Based Computer Design" and appears in Indian Journal of Scholarly Research, Volume 2, No. 9, September 2013.

LaTeX workshop for S7 B Tech (CSE) (03, 05 September 2013)

Under the auspices of the Computer Society of India (VAST Students Chapter), a workshop on LaTeX for S7 B Tech (CSE) students was held in the Computer Lab of the Department. The workshop was spread over two Fore Noon sessions, on 03 and 05 September 2013. The chief resource person for the workshop was the Head of Department of Computer applications.

All the students and staff of the department of Computer Applications assembled in the Seminar Hall of the department at 11.00 am on 05 September 2013. Teachers Day cake was cut by the Head of Department and cake was distributed to all students and staff. Faculty members made brief speeches on the occasion.

A very happy moment for the Department of Computer Applications.

Ms Ann Mary John, MCA (2009 - 2012 batch) student of Department of Computer Applications of our College, has been named as the University Topper of the MCA 2009 - 2012 batch. This information was made available by the Calicut University in the Toppers List 2012 published in the Calicut University website. Ms Ann Mary John had secured 3339 marks out of a total of 4000 marks (83.5%). She shares the honour with Shakira N of MES Kalladi College, Mannarkkad.

Talk on Cyber Security on 29 August 2013

Mr Santhosh V T

Department of Computer Applications, jointly with Computer Society of India (VAST student chapter) and ISTE (VAST Chapter), organised a talk on Cyber Security on 29 August 2013. Mr Santhosh V T, Technical Director, National Informatics Center, Ernakulam, was the main resource person for the programme. The Programme was held in the main Seminar Hall of the College during the fore-noon session.

There was a brief inaugural cermony presided over by Principal Dr Sudha Balagopalan. Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department of Computer Applications, welcomed the guest and the audience. Ms Sunitha C, Associate Professor of Computer science, offered felicitations to the Programme. Mr Manesh D, Assistant Professor in Computer Applications, Covener of the Programme, proposed vote of thanks.

Mr Santhosh mainly dealt with the the various threat scenarios present in the interconnected world of the internet. He illustrated the situations with real life examples from his own experience. The talk was followed by a lively discussion.

Internal Faculty Development Programme by Dr V N Krishnachandran (20 August 2013)

As part of the Internal Faculty Development Programme of the Department of Computer Applications, Dr V N Krishnachandran, Head of Department, presented a C programming problem. The presentation was made during 12.00 Noon - 01.00 PM on 20 August 2013 in the Computer Lab of the Department.The purpose of presenting the problem was to assess its suitability for presenting as the problem for the next All-Kerala C Coding Contest to be organised sometime during this academic year.

The problem is basically a coding-decoding one. A certain procedure would be specified to generate a positive integer using a message. The problem is to generate the integer when the message is given and to produce the original message when the integer is given.All the participants were of the view that the problem could be used as the problem for the Contest. In view of this, the full details of the problem would be released only as part of the Contest.

The programme concluded with a rough plan for the the coming All Kerala C coding Contest. Mr Sajay K R, Associate Professor, was selected as the coordinator for organising the Contest. In view of the uncertainties regarding the dates of University Examinations, it was decided to organise the Contest during the third term of the current academic year, that is, during Jan 2014 - Mar 2014.

Under the auspices of the MCA Association, a Workshop on Android Programming was held on 14 August 2013. Students of S4 MCA class and staff members attended the Workshop. The resource person for the Workshop was Miss Jubaira Shamsudeen, BTech, from Edukite Sofware Technologies, Angamaly. The following topics were discussed in the Workshop.

ViCA Bulletin Board inaugurated (26 July 2013)

As the first formal activity of ViCA (Vidya Computer Applications Association), in the academic year 2012-13, a Bulletin Board of ViCA was inaugurated on 26 July 2013. The Board has been set up on an experimental basis. The continuation of the Board would depend on the response of students and staff to the activities projected on the Board.

ViCA activities inaugurated (19 July 2013)

The activities of ViCA (Vidya Computer Applications Association) in the academic year 2013-14 were inaugurated on 19 July 2013 (A,N. session) in a colourful ceremony held in the College Auditorium. Dr Sudha Balagopalan, Principal, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. All students and staff of the Department of Computer Applications participated in the programme. The prizes of competitions held as part of the World Environment Day 2013 celebrations were also distributed during the programme. There were several lively cultural events: music, dance. Faculty members also joined in the festivities.

World Environment Day 2013 Copmetition: Prizes announced (11 July 2013)

As part of the World Environment Day 2013 celebrations, the Department of Computer Applications had organised a slide-show creation contest based on the theme of this year's celebrations. The contest was organised on 18 July 2013 and was open to S2 MCA students only. All students of the second semester MCA class were requested to create a slide-show and submit to the Staff Adviser of the Computer Applications Association. The submissions were evaluated by a team of students of the fourth semester MCA class who prepared a short-list of better submissions. From the short-list, a team of faculty members finally selected the prize winners. The names of the prize winners were announced by the Head of Department on 11 July 2013. Staff participate in FDP at Model Enginering College, Ernakulam (10 - 22 June 2013)

Ms Aparna S Balan and Mr Manesh D, faculty members of the Department, participated in a two-week Faculty Development Programme organised by Model Engineering College, Ernakulam during 10 - 22 June 2013. The programme was on the theme "Using intranet and Linux tools for empowering faculty".

Graduation Day 2013 (23 June 2013)

The Graduation ceremony of the 2009-13 B Tech students was conducted on 23 June 2013. Dr Gangan Prathap, an eminent scietist/engineer, was the Chief Guest. Since the academic schedules of B Tech and MCA courses are not in sync, the MCA students could not participate in the Graduation ceremony. Unfortunate.

Back to classes (17 June 2013)

S2 MCA, S4 MCA and S6 MCA Classes began after summer vacation and University Examinations on 17 June 2013. The registration of students to the new classes was done 17 June 2013.

    • S6 MCA students submitted the details of their proposed Project Work to their respective Guides.
    • The Head of Department and Group Tutors addressed the S4 MCA students and sought cooperation for the smooth completion of the Semester.As per present Academic Schedule S4 MCA classes are to be terminated on 30 September 2013.Since a few faculty members engaging classes were on leave, a temporary rescheduling of time table was effected.
    • Regular classes for S2 MCA began on 17 June 2013 itself.

Brahma-Vidya Social Outreach Programme:“Innovations in Assistive Technology” (15 June 2013)

Under the auspices of Brahma-Vidya Social Outreach Programme and in association with “Chakshumathi”, VAST conducted a session on “Innovations in Assistive Technology” on 15 June 2013. “Chakshumathi” is a charitable nonprofit trust for the popularisation of assistive technology among the visually challenged persons in India.

As part of the programme, 23 DAISY players were distributed to as many visually challenged persons. DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) is a technical standard for digital audio books, periodicals and computerized text. DAISY is designed to be a complete audio substitute for print material and is specifically designed for use by people with "print disabilities," including blindness, impaired vision.

Can we, the staff and students of the Department of Computer Applications, contribute anything to help the visually challenged persons by way of DAISY products?
