Circa 1820 or 1845- Cruze House or Amos Pickel House

The Cruze House was built around 1820.

The Amos Pickel House was built around 1845.

They are apparently the same house, i.e., the one in the pictures below.

Confused yet? So am I! Now consider the following:

  • The Knox County GIS website (www.kgis.org) has a PDF list of historic properties, and it also has the historic properties mapped out. Their PDF calls this property the "Bowman House aka Cruze House," and says it was built in 1820, but it does not list an address. Their map calls it both "Cruze House" and "Amos Pickel House," and lists the address as 3127 Frazier Road, but the map does not mention the Bowman name.

  • The website for Knox Heritage has a 2012 PDF document on it (see page 6), complete with photo, that calls this the Amos Pickel House, located at 3127 Frazier Road, and says it was built circa 1845.

  • The website for the Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission features a 2010 PDF document called the East County Sector Plan that says that the Cruze house, built in 1820, is located at 3321 Frazier Road. However, the mailbox at the end of the driveway you see below has an address of 3127. Also, when you put the 3127 Frazier Road address into Google Maps, it drops a locator pin right at the site of the house in the pictures below. So I'm going with an address of 3127 Frazier Road, Knoxville. Furthermore, the East County Sector Plan also includes a map on page 22 that shows two distinct locations, the "Amos Pickel House" and the "Cruze House," with the Cruze House located a bit to the south of the Amos Pickel House. The map pinpoint for the Amos Pickel House looks like it's in the same place as what the Knox County GIS site calls the "Cruze House." I think that the map pinpoint for the Cruze House is actually showing the location of the Bowman House, which was built circa 1870, according to Knox Heritage.

So for now, I don't know whether to call this the Cruze House, built circa 1820, or the Amos Pickel House, built circa 1845. If I can find a definite answer, I'll come back to this page and correct it.

Location: 3127 Frazier Road, Knoxville

The website www.ruskinarc.com has a better picture of the house than I could get, since I was standing out at the street and zooming in.
