1796- Pleasant Forest Cemetery

Pleasant Forest Cemetery was established in 1796.

Location: 401 Concord Road, Knoxville

The Pleasant Forest Church that accompanied this cemetery was destroyed during the Civil War. From the book “The Centennial Anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Semi-Centennial Anniversary of the Ministry of Rev. James Park, Part 4” by Bean, Warters & Gaut, 1897:

“The Federal army, under General Burnside, took possession of Knoxville in September, 1863, and in the winter following they destroyed Pleasant Forest Church, taking the bricks of which the house was constructed to build chimneys for the cabins of the forces stationed there during the winter” (p. 30-31).

There is an undated photo of the cemetery with the church building that was erected after the Civil War. It is included in the Knox County Two Centuries Photograph Collection, which is part of the Knox County Public Library's Calvin McClung Historical Collection. Also, someone has created a website for the cemetery, at www.pleasantforestcemetery.com.
