1793- Lebanon-In-The-Fork Church Cemetery

Location:

The Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission, in its document "East County Sector Plan: 2010," said this about Lebanon-In-The-Fork Church and Cemetery:

Lebanon "in the Fork":

Founded in 1791 by Reverend Samuel Carrick, who brought his family from Carrick's Ford across the Holston into the territory of the Lebanon congregation, helped the Church expand in 1793 when it became necessary to build on a larger scale. Built on land originally donated by Francis Alexander Ramsey, the Church also is home to one of the oldest cemeteries in Knoxville. The church building burned in 1980.

This is the headstone of Elizabeth Carrick, who died in September 1793. As far as I know, this is the oldest surviving, legible headstone in what is now Knox County. She was the wife of the Reverend Samuel Carrick, the first person to preach in this area and the founder of Lebanon-In-The-Forks Church.
