1812- John Winton House

Location: 18350 Martel Road, Lenoir City (between Lenoir City and Farragut)

The John Winton House was built in 1812. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

On the website archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com, there is a good description of the John Winton House and its history. It was posted there in 2001 by a woman named Peggy C. Wilson. She said that the information had come from a Mr. Charles Dial, who lives or lived in the area of Roane County or Loudon County, Tennessee. Mr. Dial, in turn had apparently gotten this information from two books, "Landmarks of Loudon County" and "Fuqua- A Fight for Freedom." No other information given about these books, except that in the "Fuqua" book, this house was described in detail by a woman named Linda Carson Johnson.

The "Landmarks" book might be "Landmarks of Loudon County: Its History Through Architecture," by Joe E. Spence. This book is for sale on Amazon.com, but I don't know if that's the same one that Mr. Dial referenced. The other book, "Fuqua- A Fight For Freedom" was apparently written by someone named Alya Dean Irwin, and it appears to be very hard to find. I haven't seen either of these books personally, so I can't tell if the excerpts given on archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com are accurate. But that posting has more information about the John Winton House than I have been able to find elsewhere, so I'll go with it for now.
