pray for us
excuses battered down
we are lost
safe harbor melted away
in a country that once was a friend
pray for us
smoking cigarettes again
sitting in church pews
now filled with red hats
who once marched to songs of freedom
pray for us
vomiting hybrid pseudo tomatoes
this corporate earth has desecrated
leaving us prisoners
alone in our room cells
here in these streets
cynical eyes follow us
hesitancy in our steps
distrustful of colors
in these streets
hope now eroded after the flood
we may be buried alive
without a sound
but for that idiot rain
pounding into puddles
heartening hours shipwrecked
ceding back another day
then pray for our release
from these vengeful cowboy streets
and we will come heads bowed
defeated yet defiant and unashamed:
for we were never a generation who feared loss
nor the struggle to resist
this country that was once a friend
