About John Locklear

*Note 1: There's a confusion between the following two individuals - John Locklear (1720 - 1790) / 1721 - 1787 and the person known as "Major Locklear" - born 1724 [death unknown]. John was born in 1720/21, and was his brother. The confusion seems to arise from the fact that both had a wife name Elizabeth (Black). Though the most accurate and common records indicate that this person is "Major Locklear" and not John Locklear. Therefore i changed & corrected it.

Note 2: There is also confusion between this Major Locklear and another Major Locklear born circa 1749 - died 1846, but they are two different people.

"It is said among the Indians today, (1914) that this name in Indian language was originally, Locklaha". Senate Document #677

Ruth Locklear said records show that tribal elders, testifying before Congress in the early 1900s, pronounced the name "Locklaha," which supposedly meant falling water. It was a Siouan word, from the unwritten language spoken by the Cheraw tribe, the acknowledged largest of the groups that make up the Lumbee people.Oct 12, 1993

https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1993-10-12-1993285086-story.html#:~:text=Ruth%20Locklear%20said%20records%20show,make%20up%20the%20Lumbee%20people.

The director of the American Indian Center in Baltimore estimates that 20-30% of Lumbees have the surname Locklear. It is the “Smith” of the Lumbee people but was not on the list of Lost Colonists and is not a common name in Great Britain. The name is unique to the Lumbee and to Robeson County. Most people with this last name have some Lumbee (Robeson County) ties. Locklear may be a Siouan word. Elders who testified before Congress in the early 1900s pronounced it “Locklaha,” meaning “falling water.”

Transmitting,

In Response To A Senate Resolution

O June 30, 1914, A Report On The Condition And Tribal Rights Of The Indians Of Robeson And Adjoining Counties Of North Carolina

63rd Congress 3rd Session Senate Document #677

"JACOB LOCKLEAR served in the American Army at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, and other places. This Jacob Locklear had a brother, William Locklear, who was known as "Lazy Will". This "Lazy Will Locklear" spoke the Cherokee language and often held conversations in Cherokee with Randall Locklear, Elizabeth Lowry and others. The tradition handed down by the descendants of Lazy Will Locklear is that he and certain others of the Indians remained and settled on Long Swamp and Lumber River, In Robeson County, NC when the other Indians left for the West. It is also a tradition in this family that Lazy Will Locklear and others of the Indians fought under Gen. Barnwell. It is also stated that there was a battle between some of the Indians and others near the present town of Red Springs, and there is an Indian mound there which is pointed out to this day. Recent investigations disclose the skeletons of a number of Indians who were buried there. The remains were found to be buried in the usual manner of Indian burying grounds."

"DANIEL LOCKLEAR who was living in Buie in Robeson County, N.C. in 1914 was said to be the great-great-great grandson of the JACOB LOCKILEER who was listed as the head of a household of 6 "all other free" in the Fayette District of Robeson County, NC in the 1790 Census.

"PRESTON LOCKLEAR who was 75 in 1914 said "that he and his ancestors were always known as Indians and that his parents taught him that his people lived here in Robeson County long before the white people came here.

Many of the entries have connections with Edgecombe County, NC and Halifax County, NC. The following information should be helpful in mentally following the migration of the people:

Edgecombe County, North Carolina was established in 1741 from Bertie County, North Carolina. Land records prior to 1759 are among those of Halifax County, North Carolina. Tarboro was the county seat in 1764. Halifax County, North Carolina was established in 1758 from Edgecombe County. Land records of Edgecombe and Bertie County are included in deeds --------many records are missing.

1685 8 August: "Robert Locklear came over on the ship called "Blessing" from England to Charleston, SC. He was probably an indentured servant of Stephen Bull at Charleston, SC. Captain John (Jack) Barnwell and Captain Stephen Bull came into this area for fight the Tuscarora Indians. Captain Bull was the Commander of a company of Indians. As a reward for his service, Robert Locklier received land in Edgecombe County, NC and Indian slaves from the market at Boston, Charleston, etc. The local Indians would have escapted at that time. Robert had two sons, John and Major Locklier. He lived in Quanky Creek in Edgecombe County, NC. In 1738, Major and Dudley Locklier were in court in Edgecombe County, NC. He was also a landowner in Upper South Carolina which is now a part of Robeson County, NC".

Locklear History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The ancient name of Locklear finds its origins with the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It comes from a name for a person who was a locksmith. Occupational names that were derived from the common trades of the medieval era transcended European cultural and linguistic boundaries. Occupational names have remained fairly common in the modern period. This is attested to by the continuing appearance of occupational suffixes at the end of many English surnames. Some of these suffixes include: herd, monger, maker, hewer, smith, and wright.

"It is interesting to notice that while Lockyer has predominated over Locksmith in our personal nomenclature, yet locksmith has nearly ousted lockyer as an occupative term."

Early Origins & History of the Locklear Family

The surname Locklear was first found in Somerset, where Kirby's Quest listed some of the first entries for the family: Nicholas le Lokyere; and Lucas le Lokier as both residing there, 1 Edward III (during the first year of Edward III's reign.) And this tradition continued through the years as the Register of the University of Oxford lists William Lokier from Somerset in 1604.

London had early records for the family too as the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 list Henry le Lockier there at that time.

Locklear Spelling Variations

Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Locklear family name include Lockyer, Lockyers, Lockier, Lokier, Locker, Lockweer and many more.
