About James Claypool III

James Claypoole
Birth: 14 FEB 1701 in New Castle, New Castle County, Colony of Delaware, USA
Death: 7 OCT 1789 in Lost River, Hardy, West Virginia, USA
Burial: 1789 Mathias, , West Virginia, USA - Miller Claypoole Cemetery
Will: 20 JAN 1788 Hardy County, West Virginia, USA
Wm. Claypool comes of a family which originated about the time of Oliver
Cromwell. Its first representatives in this country were two young men, brothers,
who emigrated from England about 1650 , and settled in Virginia. One of them
subsequently removed to Philadelphia and became attache d to William Penn.
The family embraced his Quaker faith and became prominent in the affairs of
that colony. One of them, James Claypole, appears as a witness to Penn's
charter and his descendants to this day spell their names Claypole.
William Claypool was a son of the Virginia brother, born in about 1690, had
three sons, and lived to the great age of one hundred and two years.

Self-Made Men. Illinois Volume. Chicago: America n Publishing Company, 18 83,
p. 72-74 [Lea Sharpe: I'm not sure that he is correct about this William , & I
doubt that he lived to be 102. There is a Claypool Genealogy & the parent of the
next mentioned James is hazy.]
**********************
"About 1745 to 1750 James and several of his cousins, all children of James
Claypool, all sold their land in Sussex Co, DE and went west: Sarah Claypool,
wife of Jacob Gum; Elizabeth Claypool who married (1) Thomas Conwell and (2)
Louis Davidson; and the family of George Claypool. Elizabeth (Claypool)
Davidson with her husband went as far as Fayette Co, PA and settled there .
The others probably went to Allegheny Co, PA as some names mentioned there
are the same as those in the Claypool group. 'In the year 1732, Joist Hite and
several others removed from PA cutting their way from York. The most authentic
information handed down leads us to believe that this party of immigrants was
the first to settle west of the Blue Ridge.' (Aler's History of Martinsburg &
Berkeley Co, WV) Then between 1745 and 1753 the Claypools went to Brocks
Gap in Augusta Co, VA. They left there in 1755. Court records of Augusta Co for
1755 Delinquents shows 'James Cleapole gone away; James Cleapole, Jr gone
away.' They moved from Augusta Co to Lost River in Hampshire Co (now Hardy
Co, WV) and located about forty five or fifty miles from the town of Winchester.
In the vicinity, cut off by mountains and the outside world, with only one poor
road entering from the north, and little contact with any other people, the
Claypools and their few neighbors built a new community. The settlers
decided to have some protection from the Indians, so they built three forts. The
first was Warren's Fort. The second was built by Stephen Ruddles at the
Innskeep farm. The third was built by Captain Claypool at Mathais. The Indians
later burned his fort and scalped him . . ":ECB (from Sam Claypool e 8/22/99)
**********************
JAMES CLAYPOOLE was a fabric weaver. He and his cousins sold their land in
Lewes, DE (20 acres), and moved west to the Shenandoah Valley of VA about
1745. They settled in Rockingham and Augusta Counties near Brocks Gap,
Linville Creek and Mill Creek where he co-built a mill in 1751. Some records
show that he settled in Cedar Branch, Rockingham Co, VA. James and family
left there about 1755 and settled at Lost River, Hardy County, VA (now WV ). He
helped build a road to Fredericksburg, VA. DAR record s list him for patriotic
service during the Revolution.
** He may have been known as 'the pilot' who owned 20 acres in Lewes, DE in
May 1742 **
** Some records show this James Claypoole as a grandson of Norton Claypoole
of Delaware.**
** Some records show he was married to a Jean ?, (Jane Byrd) b - 17 01 , d - 2 Jun 1768.
This is obviously a typo. **(from Claypool data 11/2/99)

About James Claypoole
Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor
James Claypoole is a Descendant of Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod.
James Claypoole (1634-1687) and Helena Mercer Claypoole (1638-1688), Quakers, who arrived on the 'Concord.
Concord was the name of the ship that carried the first German immigrant group from Europe to America, composed of 13 Mennonite-Quaker families of Krefeld. In 1681, William Penn, an English real estate entrepreneur, received a large grant of land from King Charles II. This grant included present-day Pennsylvania and Delaware. Penn, a Quaker, chose to draft a charter of liberties for his colony guaranteeing free and fair trial by jury, freedom of religion, freedom from unjust imprisonment, and free elections. The colony was to be a refuge for Quakers who were facing persecution. James Claypoole, a London businessman and Quaker who knew William Penn, purchased 5,000 acres of land in the new settlement and chose to move his family and business to America. For the move, Claypoole contracted with William Jefferies, master of the English schooner called the Concord, a 500 ton ship measuring 130 by 32 feet. The ship left Rotterdam on 6 July 1683 and arrived in Gravesend. Here twelve fellow Quakers (many who were former Mennonites) and one Mennonite with their families from Krefeld, 33 persons in all, made their way to Gravesend to join the Claypoole family on the voyage. The Concord left London, England on 24 July 1683 and arrived in the port of Philadelphia on 6 October after a voyage of 75 days. Here the German immigrants were greeted by a German lawyer, Franz "Francis" Daniel Pastorius, a close friend of Willian Penn. He had arrived in Philadelphia earlier in August to help prepare for the arrival of the Concord. Pastorius assisted the newcomers in establishing the Germantown Mennonite Settlement
James Claypoole, pioneer, born 1634, died August, 1687 (1688 in one article). He was the fifth son of John Claypoole and his wife Mary, daughter of William Angel of London. James became a Quaker, and was an intimate friend of William Penn. He was a merchant in London, and witnessed the signing of the Charter of Privileges granted by Penn to settlers in 1682. First signiture on the Charter of Pennsylvania after Willim Penn. He was the treasurer of the Free Society of Traders, which was formed to assist in the settlement of Pennsylvania, and, after attending to his affairs in England, he immigrated with his family, in 1685, to Pennsylvania, where he held important offices.
Alternate date for marriage is 18 Aug 1857, research by Conradus Zelinsa, Calvinist Minister.
James and Helena attended William Penn's wedding in 1672.
--------------------------------------------------
James Claypoole was a British merchant who was familiar with the boats in the harbor. There was an older Concord that sailed England to Barbadoes. This apparently was a newer version. "London the 6th, 12mo, 1682/83 (date old style making this the month of Feb.) We are all inclined to go on this vessel now put up, she is a brave ship of 500 tons burden, and 26 guns, called the Concord, the master, William Jeffries, who has used long the Virginia trade and is well acquainted with that voyage...."
This comes from London Port books: Jeffries William, Concord, 450 or 500 tons, 40 guns, to Pennsylvania 1683.

Dear Ancestor
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
neglected and alone
The name and date are chiseled out
on polished, marbled stone
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
in flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
one hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
and come to visit you.

About Sir John Claypoole
Magna Carta Gateway Ancestor
John Claypoole is a Descendant of Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod.
Event: as a Member of Parliament served as Assessor for NorthboroughAppointed Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff Appointed Clerk of the Hanaper Knighted 16 Jul 1657.
John Claypoole seems to have been the favorite son of his father, Adam Claypoole. When John married Marie Angell in 1622, his father conveyed to him the manor and lands of Northborough and thirty-two acres of Waldram Parks. The annual income he received per year from these properties was about L200. Marie's dowry was L1500.In 1642 Civil War broke out in England. The Claypoole family was a strong supporter of the Parliamentary cause. Battles were waged throughout England and in 1643 it appeared a battle between the opposing forces might occur on the Claypoole property in Northborough. The Royalists were in Crowland, only seven miles away and had another larger force farther to the east at King's Lynn. Meanwhile Colonel Cromwell was in Peterborough with a regiment of foot soldiers and a regiment of horse soldiers. Cromwell was busy destroying some of the Abbot's records. It is likely that it was at this time that the Claypooles had the rear of the stable block (adjoining the gate house) pierced for muskets. Irregular circular holes may still be seen on the North side. These holes would cover any approach by Royalist forces from the North. However, there are no records of any battles at Northborough and the war passed to other parts leaving only this trace as a reminder. The nearest military action was at Woodcroft Castle, where the Royalist owner made a spirited resistance to an attack by a detachment of Parliamentarians before surrendering. John was about 20 yrs old when he joined the Parliamentary army and was involved in the siege of Newark which ended on May 6, 1646 and the Civil War ended on June 24, 1646. John and Elizabeth went to live with his parents at Northborough Manor and Cromwell is reported to have visited them often, sometimes spending Christmas there. The sentiments which John felt concerning the political state of England were probably similar to those of Oliver Cromwell. John first gained a seat in the Long parliament. The Claypooles had suffered hardships under King Charles I's despotism. He had been summoned before the star chamber in 1637 when the attorney general was ordered to begin a prosecution against him for refusing to pay ship-money, which was court demanded. It is possible that John and Oliver studied law together earlier, which may have influenced each family's decision to allow the marriage between his eldest son, John Claypoole and the favorite daughter of Oliver Cromwell, married Elizabeth. In 1643, 1644 & 1647, John was appointed one of the assessors for the county of Northampton. He was Justice of the Peace, and probably sheriff for his own county of Northampton. He was a member of parliament in 1655 for the county of Northampton, and for Carmarthenshire if 1656.In the following year he was commissioner with his son John for levying taxes in the county of Northampton. The Protector appointed him Clerk of the Hanaper in the court of Chancery, created him a knight on July 16, 1657, and soon afterwards gave him a patent for a baronet. (A baronet was a rank of honor below a baron, but above a knight. The title was forfeited on the restoration of Charles II in 1660, but John's name appears in the Court Rolls fo Northborough until 1664.) On March 13, 1659/60 John received a new grant, jointly with Thomas Clarges, M.D. for the position of clerk on the Hanaper during their lives and the survivor to remain solely in power. The whole of his estates were now worth about L450 income per year. The Claypoole family's fortunes were increasing while under the friendship of the English Protector. John Claypoole is a 9th great-grandfather of mine.

About John Claypoole
Biography
John Cleypoole of Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire is the earliest proven ancestor of the Northamptonshire Claypoole family of America. (It has been suggested that John Cleypoole was the descendant of Richard Cleypoole, constable of St. Andrew, or John Cleypoole, Alderman of Stamford in 1495, but no real or conclusive proof can be found).
John Cleypoole of Kings Cliffe, married the daughter of Thomas Metcalfe of Walmesford, Northamptonshire about 1523. John Cleypoole appears as a taxable resident of King's Cliffe in the Northamptonshire Tax List of 15 Henry VII (1524).
Children of John Cleypoole and his wife included his eldest son and heir James Cleypoole, who would later be granted an Arms and Seal by Robert Cooke, Esq. Clarenceux King of Arms, during the 25th year of the reign of Elizabeth I of England on 17 June 1583. Other children included Henry Cleypoole, Robert Cleypoole, and a 4th son who married Elizabeth Harrington.
John Cleypoole died prior to 5 April 1558 and is buried in All Saints Church in King's Cliffe, Northamptonshire.
John's Will, dated 21 March 1557/1558 and is probated on 5 April 1558 in Petersborough, Northamptonshire (Northamptonshire Will Book II page 133).
John Cleypoole's wife Margaret was living at the time of his death as given in his will. This Margaret would strongly appear to be a 2nd later wife, and not his first wife who was the daughter of Thomas Metcalfe.
John was born, perhaps to Richard Cleypole and Elizabeth De Cromwell, circa 1495.[1][2][3]
John married Ann Metcalfe, circa 1523.[1]
John married Margaret, circa 1545, and named her in his will.[1]
John died prior to April 5, 1558, at Kings Cliffe, East Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire, England, where he was buried in the All Saints Churchyard.[1]
