"Jan Corneliszen Damen In The New World by Lorine McGinnis Schulze[1]
Jan Cornelise Damen's contract period with Jacob Stoffelszen was three years, ending sometime in 1654. It seems he diligently saved his wages because in April 1655 he purchased Cornelis van Tienhoven's house and land in Breuckelen, Long Island.[2] The cost of his new home was 1300 Carolus guilders with equal payments to be spread over a three year period.[3] Since Jan earned a total of 320 guilders in his contract time, it seems he acquired more money elsewhere.
It is likely that Jan was 20 or older when he made this purchase, giving him an estimated year of birth of 1635. This agrees with the findings in Amsterdam that he was a minor at the time of his contract in 1651. Jan signed with his mark indicating he could not write his own name.
In February 1656 Jan is found in New Amsterdam where he was the baptismal sponsor for Lubberts, the son of his cousin, Jan Cornelise Buys aka Damen.[4] From 1656 to 1661 we find no records of Jan although we know that somewhere in this time period he met, and married, Sophia Martens.[5] While no marriage record has been found, Sophia is recorded as the mother of several of their children in their baptismal records,[6] and is named in their joint will written in 1680. " Lorine McGinnis Schulze

Although Totten footnotes the sponsor Jan Damen as being Jan Jansen Damen, the adoptive father of Jan Cornelise Buys, this is not correct. Jan Jansen Damen died 18 June 1651 as per his probated will. It is almost certain that this baptismal sponsor is Jan Cornelise Damen, who later married Sophia Martens.
[5] She is also found in the records as Fytie, which is the usual diminuitive for the name Sophia. Some transcribed records have erroneously assumed a "T" in place of "F", rendering her name incorrectly as Tytie.
[6] Baptismal records for several of their children have been found, with gaps, for the years 1661 to 1685.

--Bio by John E. Sherman
A message I received 9/30/2018: The data you have for Cornelius Hendrikse Buys, father of Jan Cornelius, contains an old error. He was not fellow in Brielle. The records of another Hendrik Buijs' marriage to Hendrikje Damen were falsely reported by a researcher there and upon others looking at the records it was found that the marriage record was not there. Also, it would not stand to reason that a farm girl from quite a distant away would marry a mayor of Brielle. Record of her were found with other Damen records near they locality. sent by Elsie Hickey-Wilson ehwilson@charter.net
On the following pages will be found some of the original sources of information on the Buys family, Was researched by Mr. Willem Buys, who is the seventh great-grand son of Jan Cornelis Buys and Eybe Lubbertse. Over the past several years Mr. Buys has shared the information he has gathered with me. I met he and his lovely wife Doris, at the Orange County Genealogical Society, several years ago. We can now go back two hundred years on the Boice (Boyce) line. We have not as yet gone into France. The name was changed from Du Buis to Cornelissen Buys during the time of the Huguenots. Then in 1648 Jan Cornelis Buys emigrated to America with his Uncle, Jan Damen and Ariantje Cuvel Damen. Jan Cornelissen Buys was nineteen years old at the time. He took the oath of allegiance in September, 1687 having been in the country for thirty nine years. He was occasionally referred to on the records as "Jan the Soldier."(KCo, 56)
"On December 4,1654, he was granted a patent for 25 morgens of land across the north River, between Gemoenepoe and kil Van kol. (New Jersey) (CDM:381). He resided at the Wllabout and ws a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Brooklyn in 1677, (Stiles Brkln, 1:430,434,437). He obtained a patent in 1662 from Governor Stuyvessant for 28 morgens of land in Flatbush, lying between the farm of Cora Jans Boomgart and that of Adriaen Hageman and also for plain-land and salt meadow, as par libafr A:31 of Flatbush records. Taken from the Dutch Reformed Church records ."
The family remained in the locations of New York and New Jersey for some time. The name of Buys was changed to Boice by Jacob Jansen Buys. Two generations later we see Jacob Boice Jr. He married twice according to the family records. He married first Abigail (Abegal) Horton, by whom he had William Boice. (Again no marriage date has been d=found). According to Grandpa and Grandma Boice's Diary in "Handmaidens of the Lord," John Boice says, in speaking of Abigail Boice page 51: "My Great Grandmother Abegal Polly Boice." The Diary is a prime source of information and i will take the word of John and Mary Ann Boice, having known their grand parents and great grand parents. There needs to be a further research as to the marriage dates for Jacob and Abigal (Abegal) Boice.
Benjamin was born 2 Feb. 1775, five generations later. He and his family moved to Canada where John Boice was born 7 MAY 1814. Fredericksburg, Prince Edward County, Upper Canada. (Refugee camp for early settlement following the War of 1812.)
Loyalists). John Boice remained there and married his first wife Martha Jane Herns 2 MAR.1836; (2) Thomas born 15 Feb. 1838; and (3) Benjamin Born 7 Oct. 1839. Martha Jane and Thomas were born in Fredericksburg Upper Canada. Benjamin was born in Berry, Pike, Ill. In the year that john and were married they were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints. In 1837 they were on their way to Far West but were driven back by the mobs. They gathered in Kirtland. Then in the year 1838 they started to Missouri but were driven back by the mob. Thye stopped at Barry, Pike County, Illinois. Then they went back to ohip on business in the year 1839 and Martha became very ill. She died 14 Feb. 1840, suffering much during the persecutions. Their son died also, o n the day his mother was buried.
On the 7 May 1840, John married Mary Ann Barzee at Kirtland, Ohio. The ceremony was performed by Squire Cowdery. Then in June of 1841 they moved by water to Nauvoo, Hancock, County, near Carthage, Illinois and remained there until forced to leave by the mob in 1846. Their children Chester born 2 April 1842 at Crooked Creek, Chester, Ohio; Martin Calvin born 7 April 1844 at Crooked Creek, Hancock, Ill. John Jr. born 24 May 1846, Mc Donough, Mc Donough Co., Ilinois ;David born 118 Feb 1848 at Woods Grove, Godavis Co., Illinois; Elizabeth Ann born 27 Nov 1850at Sand Prairie, Jo Davis, Illinois; Albert Myron born 16 Mar, 1854 at Spanish Fork, Utah; Joseph Young born 26 Oct. 1856 place Spanish Fork, Spanish Fork, Utah; Eijjah born 6 Jun 1860 at Farmington, Davis, Utah; Elisha Lorenzo born 11 Feb 1863 at Smithfield, Cache, Utah; Alphereita, Alhretta, or Alpharetta (Am adopted Lamanite daughter).

About Hendrick Willemse Buijs
JAN JANSEN BUYS was the son of Jan Cornelius Buys and his first wife Eybe Lubbeftse Van Blarcom. He removed from Flatbush to Fort Orange (later the city of Albany, New York), and to nearby Schenectady to join other early settlers in what was then wild and dangerous bush area. He married Lysbet DeGroot, daughter of a Schenectady settler. In 1690 the massacre and burning at Schectady took place. The French had formed a war party from Montreal, Canada, composed of both French and Indians which attacked Schenectady, left it in ashes, killed many inhabitants and captured many more. Jan Buys escaped the massacre and took refuge in and became permanent settlers of Dutchess County, NY where the city of Poughkeepsie was later built. Jan's sister, Tryntje Buys, had married Baltus Barents Van Kleek who joined with Jan Jans Buys and three other "Dutchmen" all of whom became tenants on land for which Van Kleek's brother-in-law Robert Sanders held the patent. Children of Jan Jans Buys and Lysbet De Groot were:
Johannes Buys b. 1685
Abram (Abraham) Buys b. 1691
Lysbeth Buys b. 1694
Sara Buys b. 1703
and others
Death
Died September 24, 1646 in Holland, Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands
Note that this is a completely bogus death location. Here is a Dutch Genealogy blog which explains the error. It comes from an early Family Tree Maker autocomplete for "Holland" which failed to recognize the name as the intended Netherlands, and instead "found" a match for an obscure street in a tiny village of Reusel. As a result, this location has been propagated into countless trees all over databases and the Internet. It should be removed wherever it is found, because it is extremely unlikely that many people's genealogical ancestors actually came from that small town. Mix-216 19:13, 3 December 2014 (EST)
