About Claes Martenzen van Rosenvelt
Claes Martenszen Van Rosenvelt was a New Netherland settler.
Biography
Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt was among the numerous Holland colonists who immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1649 or 1650, undoubtedly bringing with him his wife, Jannetje Samuel-Thomas. [1]
Styntie Claes Rosevelt was admitted member of the church November 28, 1678.
Claes Rosevelt (is this him or the son Nicholas?) was admitted December 4, 1679, to the Reformed Dutch Church of New York, where they and their descendants have attended for 250 years.
Parents
Father: Maerten Cornelisz Geldersman 1600 – 1629
Mother: Cornelia Lodewijcks 1600 – 1694
Last name
"The stammvater (progenitor) of the famous American family named Roosevelt was Maertin Cornelisse Geldersman, who bought the farm of Rosevelt in Tholen, Zeeland. His son, Claes Martenzen, had taken the byname 'van Rosenvelt' or 'van Roosevelt' (in allusion to that farm), settled in New Amsterdam in 1644 and from him descend all the American Roosevelts.
Because the name 'Rosevelt' is a geographical name near Tholen(Zeeland/Netherlands) where he's born, I doubt the origin of his father would be 'Haarlem'. http://www.rooseveltoudvossemeer.nl/de-roosevelts/de-zeeuwse-roots-van-de-presidenten/
Marriage
No record of Claes Martenszen and Samuel or Thomas marriage in New Amsterdam has been found, but it is a matter of record in the "Court Minutes of New Amsterdam, August 6, 1655," that "Jannetie Hamel (possibly a misspelling/transcription error of Samuel), wife of Nicholas Martensen, declares," etc. [5] In Munsill's American Ancestry, Vol. VI., p. 19, we find the statement that he emigrated to New Amsterdam, with his wife, in August, 1649. No record of their marriage in New Amsterdam has been found, but it is a matter of record in the "Court Minutes of New Amsterdam, August 6, 1655," that "Jannetie Hamel, wife of Nicholas Martensen, declares," etc. The baptismal records of their children in the Reformed Dutch church of New York City are signed by their parents as Claes Martenszen van Rosevelt - Jannetje Samuels - Jannetje Thomas, as shown by the records herein given.
The baptismal records of their children in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam/New York City are signed by their parents as Claes Martenszen, or Claes Martenszen van Rosevelt and Jannetje Samuels or Jannetje Thomas, as shown by the records herein given. More Claes Martenszen VanRosenvelt 1623 - 1658 Born: Tholen, Tholen, Zeeland, Netherlands Died: New Amsterdam, New York, United States
Claes Martenzen van Rosenvelt arrived in New Netherlands, now New York, in 1649 or1650, undoubtedly bringing with him his wife, Jannetje Samuel-Thomas. (In the Dutch surnames, "van" means "from", and the next word is the name of the place, therefore "Rosenvelt" indicated a certain village in Zeeland, Holland, from whence they came. "Claes" is Dutch for "Nicholas". The middle name, written on records, "Martenzen", signified that his father's given name was Marten. The spelling of the surname was soon changed to Roosevelt and the "van" omitted. Roosevelt or Rosenvelt means "field of roses".
"The Roosevelt Genealogy 1649-1902" by Charles Barney Whittelsey, 1902
Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt (c. 1626 – 1659), the immigrant ancestor of the Roosevelt family, arrived in New Amsterdam (present-day New York City) sometime between 1638 and 1649. About the year 1652, he bought a farm from Lambert van Valckenburgh, comprising 24 morgens (e.g., 20.44 ha or 50.51 acres) in what is now Midtown Manhattan, including the present site of the Empire State Building.[2] The property included approximately what is now the area between Lexington Avenue and Fifth Avenue bounded by 29th St. and 35th St.
Claes' son Nicholas was the first to use the spelling Roosevelt and the first to hold political office, as an alderman. Nicholas' children Johannes and Jacobus were, respectively, the progenitors of the Oyster Bay and Hyde Park branches of the family. By the late 19th century, the Hyde Park Roosevelts were generally associated with the Democratic Party and the Oyster Bay Roosevelts with the Republican Party. President Theodore Roosevelt, an Oyster Bay Roosevelt, was the uncle of Eleanor Roosevelt, later wife of Franklin Roosevelt. Despite political differences that caused family members to actively campaign against each other, the two branches generally remained friendly.

About Maerten Cornelius van Rosenvelt
Biography
Maerten Cornelisz Geldersman (op 't Rosevelt) [1] Maerten Cornelisz Geldersman, son of Cornelis Geldersman and Maijke Meertens, married Cornelia Lodewijcx. In 1647 he owns a house or land in Oud-Vossemeer. [1]
Probably because of the great flood of 1645 the family, because everything was damaged or destroyed, moved away. [1]
In a record of 1647 his father Cornelis Geldersman is mentioned as former Schepen (Alderman) and gesworene (sworn) of the Heerlijkheid (Glory) Westkerke, who owned a vervallen (dilapidated) house there. [1]His son Maerten in 1649 buys the house of Pieter Jorisse, in the account of spiritual goods of 1654, he is mentioned as Maerten Cornelisse Geldersman op 't Rosevelt. But about the payments of the property there were some difficulies, there's an agreement of 21 February 1652 between Geldersman and his creditors, the descendants of Pieter Joris. But already in 1653 the debtor is being held hostage in Tholen and soon his His bankruptcy followed. On 11 January 1654 he appears in person before the schepenen (aldermen) of Vossemeer, but soon after this he flees across the water, chased by the baljuw (sheriff) of Poortvliet [2][1] Short after this in July 1654 the house of his mother Maijken Maertens in Oud-Vossemeer was confiscated and the same year a day of sale of his estate was held and in 1658 his farm Rosevelt was sold to Adriaan Stevens. [1]

Theodore Roosevelt, known fondly as "Teddy," served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As vice president under William McKinley, Roosevelt inherited the president's job when McKinley was assassinated in September, 1901. At the age of 42, Roosevelt is the youngest to ever take the office of president. Theodore Roosevelt genealogy demonstrates that the young Roosevelt quickly made a name for himself as he worked to move the Republican Party to more progressive reforms and a stronger foreign policy. Roosevelt was also known for his expansion of his executive power, believing that his office had the responsibility for doing whatever necessary to promote public good, as long as it fell within the parameters of the law. Roosevelt was best known for his slogan, "Speak softly and carry a big stick," which characterized much of his foreign policy.
Theodore Roosevelt's family tree is an interesting one indeed. He was a distant relative of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States. Franklin's wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, was Theodore's niece. The Roosevelt family history boasts a long line in the United States, beginning with colonists of Dutch origin in the mid-17th century. By the time Theodore Roosevelt became a household name in America, his family had established a wealthy, powerful niche in the Democratic party. However, the family joined the new Republican Party in the 1850s. His distant cousin Franklin was a member of the Democratic party when he took the office of the presidency in 1933.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the U.S. and is best known for his policies that helped America dig its way out of the Great Depression. Franklin D. Roosevelt's family history dates back to Claes van Rosevelt, the Dutch immigrant who brought the Roosevelt's to New York City in the early 1600s. In 1652, Claes bought 48 acres of land in what is now Manhattan and included parts of Lexington and Fifth Avenues, along with the future site of the Empire State Building. Claes' son Nicholas Anglicized his surname to Roosevelt and began the tradition of holding political office. He was elected an alderman.
Franklin D. Roosevelt's family tree also includes notable members like Theodore Roosevelt, who was also president of the U.S., and Isaac Roosevelt who was part of the New York Militia during the Revolutionary War. Although Franklin D. Roosevelt's family genealogy made him an only child, he had five children with his wife Eleanor Delano Roosevelt and produced many grandchildren to keep the name alive. Franklin D. Roosevelt's family tree also includes his grandmother Mary Aspinwall, who was a relative of William Stoughton, the prosecutor and judge of the Salem Witch Trials.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. She served as the First Lady of the United States from March 4, 1933, to April 12, 1945, during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office, making her the longest-serving First Lady of the United States.
Roosevelt was a member of the prominent American Roosevelt and Livingston families and a niece of President Theodore Roosevelt. She had an unhappy childhood, having suffered the deaths of both parents and one of her brothers at a young age. At 15, she attended Allenwood Academy in London and was deeply influenced by its headmistress Marie Souvestre. Returning to the U.S., she married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1905.
