About Abraham Shaw, of Dedham

Abraham Shaw migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

7 children baptized in Halifax: Joseph, Grace, Martha (died young), Maria, John (died young), John and Martha.

Disputed Origins

There is no baptism record in Halifax, Yorkshire, for Abraham Shaw. In the absence of records, multiple hypotheses for his origins were advanced. Pitman found a record in Halifax for the baptism of Abraham, the out-of-wedlock child of Abraham Dobson and Jenet Shaw, on 14 November 1585 in Northowram, Halifax, Yorkshiire, and concluded that this child was the Abraham Shaw who later emigrated to New England (Shaw was his mother's maiden name, not his father's name).[1] However, Abraham Shaw acquired property in Halifax, which would not have been possible if he was born out of wedlock.[2]

Bierbrier found that the will of Thomas Shaw Jr, proved in 1600, describes Abraham Shawe as his eldest son, while the nuncupative will of Thomas Shaw's daughter Sarah, created in 1616, includes a legacy for her brother Abraham Shawe.[3] These wills demonstrate that Thomas Shaw did have a son named Abraham and that this son was alive in 1616, when Abraham Shaw was married.[4] Bierbrier treated Abraham as a son of Thomas Shaw and his second wife Elizabeth Longbotham.[5]

The following comes from the book, Shaws of New Brunswick and Maine With Roots in Massachusetts and England 1518 - 2004: Descendants of Christopher Shaw of Northowram, Yorkshire, England and his grandson Abraham Shaw who settled in Dedham, Massachusetts that migrated north into New Brunswick and Maine. compiled by George H. Hayward, 2004.

"Dr. Daniel Turner, in his Shaw book (1973), said that Abraham Shaw may have been the son of a young unmarried Shaw girl in Halifax, England. And John Brooks Threlfall, in his book, "Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England, and Their Origins" (Madison, Wisconsin, 1990) gives Abraham's parents as Thomas and Elizabeth (Longbotham) Shaw, of Halifax, Yorkshire, England, and Thomas' father as Thomas Shaw Sr. However, Russell F. Shaw, M.D., of Los Alamos, New Mexico, in his article, "The English Ancestry of Abraham Shaw of Dedham, Massachusetts (1590-1638)," said Thomas Shawe was born about 1542, a son of Christopher Shawe, that he was dead by 6 May 1600 when his will was proved in the Prerogative Court of York (Archdesconry of Pontefract), that he married first, in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, 10 Jul 1569, Elizabeth Mawde, who was buried from Halifax Church 16 Apr 1588, and that he married second in Halifax, 15 Dec 1589, Elizabeth Longbothom. After Thomas died, Elizabeth married Richard Moore at Halifax, 15 Apr 1601, and was still living 15 Jul 1624 when she received administration of his intestate estate.

M.L. Bierbrier, "The Origin of Abraham Shaw of Dedham", The American Genealogist, April 1981, the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Shawe:

About Thomas Shaw

Biography

Thomas Shaw was christened on 30 January 1562/1563 at Northowram, Yorkshire, England.[1][2]

Marriage

He married Agnes Smith on 3 August 1584 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England.[3]

He married, second, Elizabeth Longbotham, daughter of Brian Longbotham and Alice Mawd, on 16 December 1589 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England.[4][5]

Death

His estate was probated on 15 May 1600 at North Owram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England; Will proved.

The following is courtesy of Jeffrey E. Martin:

See The English Origins of New England Families- Gary Boyd Roberts, NEHGS, 1985- Vol. III, pp. 152-4, also The Origin of Abraham Shaw of Dedham- M.L. Bierbrier, TAG- Vol 57 (1981), pp. 85-87 From Gary Boyd Robert’s article on Abraham Shaw of Dedham: “For many years it was believed Abraham was the illegitimate son of Janet/Jenet Shaw and Abraham Dobson of Halifax, York Co., England as reported by Pitman. The recent discovery and translation of the will of Thomas Shaw of Halifax and his daughter Sarah Shaw by Bierbrier indicates they were father and sister of Abraham of Dedham. The wills proved Abraham Shaw, a legitimate son of Thomas and Elizabeth Shaw, resided in Northowrom, Halifax, York Co, England "two months before the marriage of Abraham Shaw the emigrant" to Bridget Best. R.F. Shaw in his article in The Genealogist says these wills explain the "mystery" of how Abraham "could have acquired property in Halifax." After extensive research of land records in Halifax Parish by R.F. Shaw "definitive evidence" was found to link Abraham to Thomas and his grandfather Christopher through the tracing of a parcel of land. Also the given names of Abraham's siblings: Sarah, Susan, Joseph, Jonas, and Martha are very similar to the names of his own children: Joseph, Grace, Martha, Maria (Mary), John and Susannah. Another point in favor of Thomas Shaw as father of Abraham is the mentioning of a Henry Beste in Thomas' will as a friend and a supervisor. Henry Best was the father-in-law of Abraham.”

Thomas Shaw

Gender: Male

Christened: January 20, 1562 Northowram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England

Death: May 15, 1600 (37) Northowram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England

Place of Burial: St. John the Baptist Parish (Minster) Church, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom

Husband of 1) Elizabeth Mawde 2) Elizabeth Longbotham

Notes

WILL: proved 6th May 1600 in the Prerogative Court of York.

MARRIAGE: (1) Halifax, 10th July 1569, Elizabeth Mawde, who is buried from Halifax Church 16th April 1588, dau. of John Mawde of the Clough Head, Northowram. (2) Halifax, 15th December 1589, Elizabeth Longbotham, who was living 15th July 1624. There were several men named Thomas Shaw in Halifax Parish at the same time, but, in land records and court actions, this Thomas is clearly described as the father of Abraham, and the husband of Elizabeth Mawd and Elizabeth Longbothom, plus he is clearly described as the son of Christopher of Northowram.

Christened Jan. 20, 1562 ?

Elizabeth Longbotham:

The parents of "Elizabeth Longbottom," wife of Thomas Shaw, are not identified in:

M.L. Bierbrier, “The Origin of Abraham Shaw of Dedham [Massachusetts], The American Genealogist (Volume 57[1981]:85-87.

As copied from a Collaboration Note:

! PARENTAGE: Accdg. to Russell Shaw, the parentage of Elizabeth is not clear. He said that Threlfall "apparently on onomastic evidence alone, concluded that Elizabeth Longbothom was a daughter of Brian Longbottom of Northowram." (50 Great Migration Colonists, by Threlfall, pg. 363, quoting Halifax Parish Registers, pub. by Yorkshire Archeological Society, Vols. 36-45, and Probates of Yorkshire.) But in a will of one John Longbottom of Northowram, there is a reference to a debt owed by "Elizabeth Shaw, sister of John Longbottom sonne of Richard Longbottom", and the surname is a common one in Halifax Parish. Further research is needed. ! SOURCE: The Genealogist 10:1:91, "Ancestry of Abraham Shaw," by Russell Franklin Shaw.

About Thomas Shaw, of Northowram

On 31st September 1569 he [Christopher Shaw] gave his eldest son Thomas, as a marriage settlement, his copyhold of Scolecote Brow land. It is probably for this reason that Thomas is not mentioned in his will, dated 19th February 1583 and proved in the prerpgative Court of York, 6th May 1584.

Biography

Thomas described himself as "Thomas Shawe of the Towneshipp of Northowram parishe of Hallifax and County of Yorke" in his will.[1]

The registers of Halifax, Yorkshire, England, record Thomas Shaw married Elizabeth Longbottom on 16 December 1588.[2]

Thomas Shawe had children:

Abraham Shawe, oldest son;[1] [3]

Jonas Shawe,[1] [3] baptised 5 June 1597 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, West Riding, Yorshire;[4]

Sarah Shawe,[1] baptised 2 April 1592,[2] died 17 April 1616;[3]

Susan Shawe,[1] misprinted as Sarah in the transcription of the nuncupative will of her sister Sarah,[3] baptised 22 September 1594 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, West Riding, Yorshire;[5]

Martha Shawe,[1] [3] baptised 9 September 1599 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, West Riding, Yorshire;[6]

In his will, written on 10 January 1599 and proved 15 May 1600, Thomas left one third of his goods and chattels to his wife Elizabeth, and the other two thirds to be equally divided between his daughters: Sarah Shawe, Susane Shawe and Martha Shawe (all in their minorities) and to any child that his wife might be pregnant with.[1]

After Thomas' death, his widow Elizabeth married Richard Moore by 1616.[3]

Thomas' daughter "Sarah Shawe late of Northowrome" made a nuncupative will, which proved on 17 April 1616, in which she leaves legacies to her brothers Abraham Shawe and Jonas Shawe; to her sisters Sarah Shawe and Martha Shawe; to John, Joseph and Grace Moore; and to her mother, Elizabeth, wife of Richard Moore.[3]

Shaw Clan Motto: Fide Et Fortitudine ("By Fidelity and Fortitude"). History of Clan Shaw (Schaw): The Lowland surname is of a territorial origin and first appears in the 13th century.

Clan Tartans:

Shaw History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The clans of the Pictish people in ancient Scotland were the ancestors of the first people to use the name Shaw. It was a name for a person who shared some of the qualities attributed to a wolf. Shaw is a nickname surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Nicknames form a broad and miscellaneous class of surnames, and can refer directly or indirectly to one's personality, physical attributes, mannerisms, or even their habits of dress. The surname Shaw is derived from the Gaelic first name Sithech, which means wolf.

Early Origins of the Shaw Family

The surname Shaw was first found in Perthshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Pheairt) former county in the present day Council Area of Perth and Kinross, located in central Scotland, where the family appears to have been firmly entrenched in the Eastern coastal regions well before 1000 AD.

While some claim that the Clan originally descended from a MacDuff, one of the ancient Earls of Fife, the first official mention in documents shows them to be present at the General Council held by King Malcolm at Forfar in 1061.

However, this ancient leadership was challenged by many other Clans Commyns (Cummings) who had leased the Shaw lands of Rothiemurchus.

Shaw Spelling Variations

In the Middle ages, spelling and translation were not yet regulated by any general rules. spelling variations in names were common even among members of one family unit. Shaw has appeared Shaw, Shawe, Mac Ghille-Sheathanaich (Gaelic) and others.
