St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, Virginia, Est. 1679
The First Church of the First First-Lady
Author: Revd. Dr. E. Allen Coffey
Martha Custis' marriage to George Washington, St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, Virginia, January 6, 1759
Virginia's General Court confirmed the establishment of St Peter's Parish on April 29, 1679. In the summer of 1700 the vestry ordered that a second Lower Church replace an earlier, structurally weak building known as the Broken Back'd Church. The new church, begun in 1701, was in use by July 1703. To-day it is the oldest parish church in the Diocese of Virginia and the third oldest in the Commonwealth.
Martha Dandridge, who would later become the wife of Col. George Washington, was born at Chestnut Grove on June 2, 1731. She married Col. Daniel Parke Custis, a member of the vestry and former churchwarden in June 1749. Her father, Major John Dandridge, had also served as churchwarden and vestryman, and her great-grandfather had been the first rector of nearby Bruton Parish. After eight years of marriage she was widowed with two surviving children.
On the sixth of January 1759 the Rector of St Peter's Parish, the Rev'd Mr. David Mossom, solemnized the marriage of Col. George Washington and the Widow Custis. It has always been assumed that another future First-Lady, Letitia Christian, later the wife of President John Tyler, was baptized in the parish church in 1790.

Biography
Harvey Wayne Powers - www.merrymount.net/harvey_powers/rterrell/rterrell.htm suggests that the instant Robert is correctly the son of Timothy, but incorrectly, that is the grandson of Richmond Terrill. The instant Robert eventually settled in Orange County, Virginia where he was a large landowner and slaveholder.
Robert Terrill's lease from Spotswood executors (150 acres) was directly on the north bank of the Rapidan River in Culpeper County (at the time in Orange County) and, as near as can be estimated just north of what is currently Clark Mountain. Ref: Orange County Index of Deeds; Bk. 6, p. 101 - 105, (a lease on 27 August 1741 grantor - Alexander Spottswood, Executors, et. al.), Orange County Historical Society, Orange, Virginia. It is believed that the lands the Robert took up were originally part of the Alexander Spottswood patent of 28 May 1713 that include a total of 4,020 acres (Ref: Forgotton Companions, Paula S. Felder, p. 10-11; p. 11 references the relationship between John Baylor and Alexander Spotswood). John Baylor was one of numerous small land owners in the area of Orange and Spotsylvania Counties. He is know to have held more than one 1000 acres patent. (Ref: Forgotton Companions,Paula S. Felder, p. 226) Robert Terrill's plantation, formerly part of John Baylor's patent was located just north of present day Route 20and west of the present site of the city of Orange, Virginia. It is believed that John Baylor was from Caroline Co., Virginia. (Ref: Fielding Lewis and the Washington Family, Paula S. Felder, p. 182). Robert is also believed to have owned property mentioned in his will alongPamunkey Creek southeast of the location of the town of Orange, Virginia. Robert's home is believed to have been south of the forks of thePamunkey River.
Robert is referenced in the DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Part III, 1990, p. 2905; for Patriotic Service during the RevolutionaryWar.
Robert's will dated 13 Februray 1786 and was probated 23 March 1786 in St. Thomas Parish of Orange Co., Virginia. The Inventory and Apprasial was received 28 April 1786 and the Reciept was on 28 April 1789, also both in Orange Co., Virginia.

About Timothy Terrell
The family spells the name both Terrell and Terrill in the early days. After Timothy Terrill (RIN#1600), most of his descendents elect Terrill, while the descendents of his brothers pick Terrell. In addition to the five children listed here, Timothy Terrill may have had several other children including daughters Elizabeth and Mary (however, Dicken notes (p.38-9) that these two had their marriages recorded in Christ's Church Parish, Middlesex County, while Timothy was in New Kent County until his death). Obbediah Terrell may be a son. He was with this Timothy's son Timothy in Tennessee fighting indians. And there are Archibald Terrell and Presley Terrell who moved from Orange County, Virginia, to Woodford County, Kentucky, in 1807. Dicken lists some of their children (p.40). She speculates they may be sons of William Terrell (RIN #01891) and grandsons of Timothy.

TIMOTHY TERRELL OF NEW KENT COUNTY, VIRGINIA Descendants say that Timothy Terrell, of New Kent County, was born in 1658, and almost everyone agrees that he was a son of Richmond Terrell, who immigrated to Virginia in 1656. A mistake that has been repeatedly made is that this Timothy of New Kent County, b. 1658, was a son of William and Susannah Terrell. There are many indications that William Terrell was born about 1660, and it is believed that he and Timothy were brothers, but certainly not father and son. A family tradition credits Timothy with brothers, Richmond and William Terrell. It seems to us a reasonable conclusion that Timothy’s brother, Richmond, was the Richmond Terrell, Jr., who signed the “Grievance” in 1677, and that his brother, William, was the one who married Susannah Waters. There were probably other brothers and sisters also who may have moved on to other counties. In America as well as in England, the Terrells differed in the spelling of the name. Though most all in Virginia were kin, we have found the name Terrell, and again Terrill in referring to the same person, and sometimes Terrall, but descendants of Timothy, who settled in Orange County, Va., seem to have adhered mostly to Terrill. It is known to descendants that Timothy married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of John Foster. Record is found in St. Peter’s Parish Register of the baptism of three of their children, but it seems almost certain that there were other children whose records were lost. Timothy was a vestryman in St. Peter’s Parish as shown in the vestry book. The children of Timothy and Elizabeth, recorded in St. Peters V. B. were: (1) (2) Mary, baptized 5 Jan. 1688-89. Robert, bapt. 25 Dec. 1697. (3) Joseph, b. 16 Nov., bapt. 31 Dec. 1699 Besides the above named, it is tradition that Timothy and Elizabeth (Foster) Terrell had sons William and Timothy, and some daughters. Some have thought that Elizabeth, who married Joseph Andrews
in 1705, and Mary, who married John Marston in 1711, were children of Timothy; however, their marriages were recorded in Christ’s Church Parish, Middlesex County, while Timothy Terrill, b. 1658 was in New Kent County in 1699 and probably died there. It is supposed that most of the Terrells of Spottsylvania, Orange, and Augusta Counties were descendants of Timothy, except Henry Terrell II who resided in Spottsylvania for a while. In a list of tithables in Orange County was William Terrills Quarter in Constable James Pickett’s district in 1739. On 9 Feb. 1737/8 William Pickett patented land on the north side of Conway River, above the land of William Terrill. (Va. Mag. Vol. XLIX, p. 190, Patent B. 17, p. 494.) Conway River had its source in the Blue Ridge Mountains and flows southeast through the valley between the Blue Ridge and Southwest mountains, and is near the line between Madison and Green Counties, Va.

Notes
