"William Rogers, the oldest surviving son of John and Mary Rogers, was born in Surry County around 1657. Sometime in 1678-79 he married Jane Owen, the widow of Bartholemew Owen. There was only one surviving child of this marriage, a son named William. In 1685, William Rogers and Joshua Proctor were jointly granted 900 acres of land in Surry. Shortly thereafter Jane died, and in 1686 William married Elizabeth Cartwright, daughter of Robert Cartwright. They had at least nine children. In 1714, William was granted 220 acres on the south side of Blackwater Swamp in Surry. He died in 1727, leaving his plantation of 450 acres to his youngest son, also named William. (It was not particularly unusual in the seventeenth century for a man to give the same name to sons born of different wives. This custom is a great inconvenience to family historians.)"

About John Rogers, Va. Burgessman
John Rogers was born in England in or about 1617 and emigrated to Virginia at the age of 18, arriving at Jamestown on the ship George on August 21, 1635. He moved across the James to what is now Surry County. His wife's name was Mary, and we think she was Mary Atkins, daughter of Richard Atkins, because a 1668 tithable list for Surry shows John living in the Atkins household. The marriage has been listed as early as 1641, but judging from the ages of the four known children it probably didn't occur until the early to mid 1650s. In 1666, John was granted 200 acres of land in Surry. At the time of Bacon's Rebellion, in 1676, John signed a petition against the government, and he was one of many in Surry fined for this action the next year. He appears to have died around 1685, but no will is preserved. John's second son John Jr. moved to Bertie County, North Carolina, where he died in 1726.

Birth: Dec. 9, 1619 Wales Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham South Yorkshire, England Death: 1683 Virginia, USA
John Rogers was born Wales, England on Dec.9, 1619 to John Rogers and Rachel Newman. John Rogers, married Mary Booth Atkins and had 4 children. He passed away on 1683 in Virginia, USA. JOHN ROGERS b. 1617 England/ Wales had arrived in 1635 aboard ship "George" and had wife MARY by 1666 when they then lived in Surry Co. VA per transfer of 4 persons to JOHN ROGERS then for his 200 acres of land in Surry Co. VA. JOHN ROGERS and wife MARY had a deed of sale of their 200 acres in SURRY CO. VA land to EDWARD GRANTHAM in 1682. We believe that is when they may have removed then from SURRY CO. VA to ISLE of WIGHT CO. VA and may have died after 1686 in Isle of Wight Co. VA or surrounding regions.
This family is a connection of the Duggers. Ginny's great-grandfather Richard T. Michael was the son of Sarah Kirkland and the grandson of Armon Dugger. Armon's great-grandmother was Priscilla Bennett, a daughter of James Bennett and his wife Mary Rogers.
This is one of many Rogers families in colonial Virginia. It is relatively well known, thanks to its connections with the Bennetts. A Family Tree Maker genealogy by Jack Morris contains most of the basic information.
11 William Rogers, the oldest surviving son of John and Mary Rogers, was born in Surry County around 1657. Sometime in 1678-79 he married Jane Owen, the widow of Bartholemew Owen. There was only one surviving child of this marriage, a son named William. In 1685, William Rogers and Joshua Proctor were jointly granted 900 acres of land in Surry. (It was not particularly unusual in the seventeenth century for a man to give the same name to sons born of different wives. This custom is a great inconvenience to family historians.)
10 Mary Rogers, one of four known daughters of William and Elizabeth Rogers, was probably born in the mid 1690s. Around 1715 she married James Bennett. They had at least eight children. Her date of death is not known.
Biography
The ROGERS are the ANCIENT CELTS. We know our Rogers DNA group is also the same haplogroup as several others who were also haplogroup tested. We can tell from the various DNA markers too that they would be same haplogroup if they are a DNA Match to us as well. This haplogroup we have is the same for many today who are in England, but have the Ancient Celts as their distant ancestors. This goes back thousands of years on the haplogroup testing.
We know William Rogers b. 1657 Surry Co. VA is the son of JOHN ROGERS, Ist, who was born abt. 1617 and arrived on ship "George" in 1635 and may have been the same JOHN ROGERS who was a Burgess in Jamestown VA. Later in 1666 John Rogers moved across the James River to SURRY CO. VA when he gained 200 acres of land for the transfer of 4 persons to him.
In 1668 he is listed on the tax list for Surry County, Virginia.
This John Rogers born abt. 1617 in Wales remained in Surry Co. VA until he died between 1685 - 1686 in VA.

Rogers History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms
The ancient Anglo-Saxon culture once found in Britain is the soil from which the many generations of the Rogers family have grown. The name Rogers was given to a member of the family who was a fame-spear or one who was a skilled soldier. The surname Rogers was originally a Germanic personal name derived from the elements hrod, or "renown" combined with geri, or "spear;" thus the name suggested "prowess with a spear."
The surname Rogers may have derived from the Old French word Rogier. After the Norman Conquest, the Old English naming system gradually dissolved. Old English names became less common and were replaced by popular continental European names. The earliest surnames in England were found shortly after the Norman Conquest and are of Norman French rather than native English origins.
The Rogers Motto
The motto was originally a war cry or slogan. Mottoes first began to be shown with arms in the 14th and 15th centuries, but were not in general use until the 17th century. Thus the oldest coats of arms generally do not include a motto. Mottoes seldom form part of the grant of arms: Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the coat of arms, and can be added to or changed at will; many families have chosen not to display a motto.
Motto: Nos Nostraque Deo
Motto Translation: We and Ours to God.
Early Origins of the Rogers Family
The surname Rogers was first found in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 as Adam filius Rogeri in Lincolnshire; and Robert filius Rogeri in Norfolk. Kirby's Quest of Somerset listed Waltero Rogero in Somerset, 1 Edward III (during the first year of Edward III's reign.)
Over 100 years later, the name had evolved from the early Latin versions that held either the vowel "i" or "o" to the more recent spellings we understand today. The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 listed Willelmus Rogerson and as a personal name Rogerus Smyth.
The name was "rare or absent in England north of a line drawn from the Humber to the Mersey. Scattered over the rest of England and also Wales, but generally infrequent in the eastern counties, being by far the most numerous in the western half of its area. It is most common in Herefordshire and Shropshire, and also in Cornwall." This author continues "Rodger is the Scotch form, it has no definite distribution. In England we only find it occasionally, as in the case of Rodgers in Derbyshire."
From this vantage, we explored the aforementioned "Scotch" (Scottish) origin further. In this case, many of the records were recorded in the Anglo or English version rather than the previous entries that had the Latin form. "Roger was appointed abbot of Dryburgh in 1152. Roger, son of Oggou, attested a deed of middle of thirteenth century. William Roger was tenant of the abbot of Coupar-Angus in 1468." [1] Black continues "Rodgers is the more common form with Scots. Rogers, in some parts of central Scotland, is pronounced Rodgie, and some Gaelic-speaking people in Perthshire pronounce it Rougie and sometimes Royger. John Rodgers, born in Maryland, 1771, son of a Scots colonel of militia, fired with his own hand the first shot in the war with Great Britain in 1812."
"The family of Rogers of Home, in Shropshire, are a cadet of the Norburys of Norbury in that county. In 7. Edward II., [(seventh year of Edward II's reign)] Roger de Norbury, son of Philip, and grandson of Roger de Norbury, had a grant of the estate of Home. His son took the name of Rogers, and his posterity under that appellation have ever since resided at Home. "
Roger of Salisbury (died 1139), "also called Roger the Great, bishop of Salisbury and justiciar, was of humble origin, and originally priest of a little chapel near Caen. The future king, Henry I, chanced, while riding out from Caen, to turn aside to this chapel to hear mass. Roger, guessing the temper of his audience, went through the service with such speed that they declared him the very man for a soldier's chaplain, and Henry took him into his service."
Rogers Spelling Variations
Sound was what guided spelling in the essentially pre-literate Middle Ages, so one person's name was often recorded under several variations during a single lifetime. Also, before the advent of the printing press and the first dictionaries, the English language was not standardized. Therefore, spelling variations were common, even among the names of the most literate people. Known variations of the Rogers family name include Rogers, Roger, Rodger, Rodgers and others.
